Local Multiplayer Games
« on: May 21, 2007, 09:48:00 AM »

I don't have any experience with this nor do I play multiplayer games but wanted to know if this is even remotely possible.  I think there are some games that offer multiplayer on a local network (if you have 2 xbox360's on the same router/hub).  Is it possible to establish a VPN connection between 2 routers (routers with a firmware such as dd-wrt) and have 2 xbox's see each other??

Just a theory, haven't tested this myself but wondering if anyone has.

Hmm...it depends if the packets that are broadcasted by the 360s to find each other are routable.  VPN would be using two different subnets to talk to each other so I think it would not work.  If the VPNs were bridgeable this would work but I do not think they are.  I like the thought though.  It will make me brainstorm.

I think this is more than possible. All you would need to do is setup a dirty filthy little slut of VPN over the inet. Using something like himachi might work, but bear in mind you would have too change the ip of the 360 to accomadate the network. But to be honest why not just get xlink kai or xbconnect and use that it would be a lot simplier and no need of the headache of brainstorming.

What I was thinking that with the use of Bridged VPN between 2 routers that there wouldn't be a need to run anything on a computer.  yah you probably would have to change the ip of the xbox to accomodate for the new subnet but if it works why not.

I do have my router on this firmware but I don't have anyone else to remotely experiment this with.

Oh and dd-wrt firmware does have xlink Kai support for xbox games but I'm not sure if the 360 is supported on that network just yet.

check out http://www.leafnetworks.net/ for an easier way to solve your connecting xbox consoles on different networks issue... i have not used it for multiplayer, and a pc running xp and the leafnetworks app is required on each network, but i have used it for filesharing among my closest friends and it works pretty good(i can browse their shared networks as if they were on my home network which is what you want for system link games).
