Sometimes cable is better. Generally cable is offered at higher speeds. If you can get faster DSL go with the DSL. Also because cable is a shared connection and DSL is a dedicated line if you are in a high population area like a crowded neighborhood or apartment complex, cable could be slower during peak times even if it is advertised as faster.
To answer the OP, Cable is usually better, but DSL should be sufficient as long as you get at least 1Mbps or so. I play on 1.5Mbps DSL and it works great.
I've had both and Cable blows DSL away, I'm going by experience not by hearsay.
You conveniently left out the fact that if you are far from the DSL hub you will have horrible connections and speeds and the fact that you have to put unscramblers on your phones or else they run like crap.
