Shadowrun Beta Responsible for Live Outage?
Posted by XanTium | December 28 20:24 EST

From xbox360fanboy.com:
Quote

Officially, we don't know why the outage occurred.
360 Fanboy reader, Eric, noticed that the Shadowrun beta officially began last night. A post on the Shadowrun community forums presents and interesting twist on the outage theories:
"There are currently some issues propping the beta build to the production servers. We are trying to get the beta out tonight but it may be delayed somewhat. More information will go here as soon as it is available."

The question is, did the beta cause the Live crash, or is it just a coincidence? This is the first time a public beta has been put on Xbox Live -- and Shadowrun is the first game to utilize Live Anywhere -- so it is conceivable that it could cause unforeseen problems.

If a tree fell in the woods, in the middle of nowhere, and killed a mime... would anyone care?

Does it really matter if the newest beta caused an outage?   Sh!t happens.  Especially when we are talking about computer systems and networks.

Erm, wasn't the phantasy star universe beta the first public 360 downloadable beta?

Shadowrun sounds cool...hope they can pull off the integration.

Live anywhere, seriously, this is a huge thing for me. I mainly want XBL/MSN integration, the whole mobile thing is a bonus, and im not sure how it'll work, cos if im connected all the time on my mobile, my mobile internet charges will be quite large and ruin it.

Still, w00t! I don't care if the servers are down if its for a worthy cuase (not shadowrun, looks lame really, but live anywhere!)

yes it does f**king matter, when people have paid for a service and microsoft is using it for beta testing and this testing is ruing it for the customer...

jeezes... cant microsoft ever get their own test network, so the customer dont have to suffer....

I think a few people caught the point:

It doesn't really matter if the live service crashed for a while....  no matter the reason.  They should expect it by now.

What was implied that some didn't realize:   Microsoft *has* to use the main Live service as a beta testing network for two reasons...

1. History:  They have always used their customers to test products that aren't ready.  If you haven't figured that out yet, then you need a few more years of computer experience under your belt before commenting.

2. Reality:  How can you mimic the real world demand and load that is on the entire network from all over the place???   Well, one easy and cheap way is to just use your real world network when you think you are ready and hope for the best.   The only other way I know of to really test a product under those kinds of loads is very costly.   There is some "in between" ground but when you are testing something that is GLOBAL, there is no local environment that can match that scale...except for a GLOBAL test.

You can test products under "fake" loads, but it just isn't the same thing as when the service actually goes live.

So....   It doesn't really matter... MicroShaft is going to do what ever they want to do and test things how ever they want to test it...   it will never be good enough because there will always be people out there to complain about it even if they delay a product (vista) for 2 years in order to "get it right".  Even after 2 more years it won't be right...  Gee too bad Sony doesn't have that problem too (PS3).  Oh wait...they do.

When you build a product that is that big of a step past anything else that is out, there is no way you are going to get it 100% right the first time....just good enough to get it out the door so you can hopefully fix the problems that do and WILL come.

Perfect way to put it dude ^

Plus, it was only a day, or something. Quit your bitching (to the guy that was). Here in australia we even didn't have any problems.

Should just be happy that we're getting new innovations.

LoL I don't have a PS3 or an X360 but let me be frank, I do think this is hilarious, because not to long ago the PS3N went down when the GTHD demo went live. Then all Xbox Live Users kept slagging of PS3N for going down because no one pays for the service.

Then behold, Xbox Live goes down. Though this is the most ironic part, it can survive a power outage for days in Seattle or were ever the servers are located and yet some guy flips a wrong switch and the whole world is out of Xbox Live action.

If I was paying for Xbox Live I would want a refund on the downtime I lost, something I love about the PS3 Network service, gaming is free which should apply to Xbox Live IMHO.

I disagree.  With all of the illegal game pirating going on out there, Microsoft and the Devs need to make thier money somewhere.  I'm happy to pay 5 bucks a month to keep my favorite gaming system alive.

Who really cares what happened i mean xbox live is already back up. MMO's are usually down at least half a day a week depending on issues and they cost a lot more. We should feel lucky that we have a xbox live. just my two cents
