Any Recommendations For Wireless Router/nic?
« on: October 22, 2006, 02:43:00 AM »

Im looking to move to wireless but everywhere I look I see wireless not getting good enough reception, or it always dying out, or heating up.. Im just trying to find the best deal for wireless that is compatible with 360 of course. I also am worried about the whole port set up. I had a wired router before and could never configure ports to open right so I was stuck with limited access to things.

if by nic you mean a wireless nic, i've had great luck with pretty much every brand name card i've tried. (belkin, linksys, and i can't remember off the top of my head what the 3rd card i have is, but i think it might have been dlink)

i have a linksys router, but if you can wait, you might want to hold out until 802.11n comes out. you'll get a much better connection from it and it will be quicker too. theoretically your 360 should be able to take advantage of it assuming that you can find an 802.11n wireless access point that would wire into the 360 through ethernet (usb won't work)

here is some info on the different wireless standards

Alright, sweet thanks. I think im just going to get the 802.11g right now, not patient enough to wait for 802.11n. As time goes by, I will eventually update naturally pop.gif

edit: lookin on ebay and looks like 802.11n is already out ohmy.gif

as far as i know what is out now is called "pre-n", it is a wireless router/card that doesn't meet any specific protocol since the 802.11n protocol isn't finalized yet. if you wanted to give that a go, it should work just fine. worst case scenario its backwards compatible with 802.11b and 802.11g.

According to the IEEE 802.11 Working Group Project Timelines,[2] the 802.11n standard is not due for final approval until July 2007.

however Id like to add that since teh 360 is a media extender, just make sure that what you buy will handle 802.11a/b/g. That should cover you for most devices...

dont think the 360's wireless nic can do 'n' and your gonna want 'a' for MCE trust me

the official one doesn't do n, but theoretically a 3rd party pc one should work just fine with the 360 (assuming that its a bridge that plugs in through ethernet and not a USB one)

i upgraded from a linksys WRT54G to a WRT55AG so that my 360 could have the A band all to itself and it is working out nicely for me.
