Xbox Live And Xbox 360 Live Still Compatible?

I was wondering if I buy a XBox live subscription, can I use it on my 360?  The reason I ask is because the regular Live subscription is way cheaper than the one that is strictly for the 360.  I know it says in the faq that you can change it to the Gold service, but that FAQ was written prior to the release of the console, therefore I am not sure if they are still allowing this.

20 to 30 bucks for an XBox Live account

50 bucks for an XBox 360 Gold Account

Can I buy the regular XBox Live subscription and then use that as Gold on my 360?
