Apart from Live, if M$ do have an easy way of detecting modified firmware then I guess there isnt anything to stop them incorporating it into game software offline.

If it detects modified firmware, said game wont boot.

If they can technically do that, then they will. Its a calculated risk that everyone took when modding their firmware.

I just hope we are over estimating what M$ can technically do about firmware upgrades on the DVD drive. Its either something they completely overlooked or they have had the aces up their sleeves from day one.

this thread amazes me, for the people scared of getting banned go buy a core console and use it for live only, everyone here knew what the concequences were when they flashed their drive, its nothing new, if you get banned you get banned lesson learned.

I did not know the consequences, I did not flash my drive but bought the xbox like this, I guess I should have read up more.
I cant just go and by a core to use on live. My pockets are not lined with the rarest of silks and crammed with big fist fulls of cash like yours.

Frankie aka Stinkles on GAF, resident webmaster at Bungie.net had this to say today.

http://www.bungie.ne...x?link=bwuoct13

FooMoJive

You must know that now that Team SWAT is ranked, it's now become Team MODDER. What is Bungie doing to combat modders and other cheaters ruining our favorite new ranked playlist? Any new techniques to take out these losers? It would be nice if the banhammer had some shiny new spikes on it.

I told you, didn’t I? “Make it ranked,” you said. And we did. The question above is legitimate, but a little exaggerated. There’s not really a noticeable jump in modding. But I will say this to modders, and please, spread the word if you know any. Quit now. Right now. Today. The Banhammer will look like the nicest thing we ever did pretty soon. That is the only warning I am giving, because bluntly, I want the modders to suck it down when it arrives in the night like an angry ninja

On GAF, he says October 18th has nothing to do with them, but I think Microsoft is about to unroll some new security measures.

Ummmm

1. This is not a dashboard update.... Read what it says on xbox.com
2. If they are going to stop us, they wouldn't wait this long would they?
3. The 0078FK drive being changed is good proof they can't totally stop the firmware upgrade
4. Worse case scenario, we get banned from live, unless you put back your original firmware
5. Banning or bricking people's consoles (event hose who pirate) is going to cost M$ money with live downloads, accessories, there new HD-DVD drive...

I'd say maintenance, and adding some cool new secret stuff demo's of splinter cell and GOW maybe, a lot of people will want to download these demos, so maybe they are just making sure nothing is too slow or crashes, thena gain it could be nothing at all, but it ain't an update they state that.

Number 3 is a very good point, goes with number one 2. I don't think they can even detect the firmware being hacked. Mabey they can detect the games being a backup. Didn't one of the people who make the firmware say that the stealth firmware is undectable, the only way you could detect it was to literally desolder the chip and do something i forget. I remember reading it somewhere.

here comes a ?. ive been reading a lot of this thread.

why doesnt M$ go after the people or websites that supply the places to download the games? just like the peeps did to napster? lets be serious...m$ is NOT loosing money when people back up there games. they only loose money when people download the games. am i right or ami wrong?

stop the peopl who are suppling the downloads...and TONS of people will b forced to buy the games. we all win. were able to play our backupos...and now m$ is also able to make the money on every single game sale.

Could you ask him if they have any plans to combat firmware mods?

1. True. People are just being paranoid.
2.  False.  Do you know how long it takes to implement fixes?? You do not want to ban innocent people.
3.  COMPLETELY FALSE!!  With Xbox 1 do you know how many hardware revisions there were to combat pirates!?  MS in the past has made hardware revisions (even small ones) to make chipping the sonsole harder or impossible.  They also banned people fromn live.  So they do both!!
4.  Again false.  They banned the consoles EEPROM for Xbox 1.  we do not even know where this information is stored in the 360.  The console itself can be easily banned.
5.  M$ is going to stop piracy at any cost.  (as long as it does not hurt their public image)

If you dont have a modded drive then why are you posting in here?

Because this thread was not created just for people with hacked firmware to shit themselves.
The thread is a discussion about the LIve downtime not another "Lets speculate about banning and firmware hacks thread"

It would seem reading this there are a lot of people Bricking their Pants as well as their drives.
