Installing Rj45 Network Port
« on: August 21, 2006, 12:34:00 PM »

Hey, im looking to install a rj45 port in my living room so i can use xbox live without a trailing cable through my house. At the mo my pc is using usb modem and no router, so i am using internet connection sharing and using a crossover cable from my pc to the xbox.

So what i am doing is installing 2 ports in either room, then joining the ports with a network cable.

Because it is still going from pc to 360 i assume it still needs to crossover somewhere.
So would it be like:

360 ----------------rj45 wall------------------rj45-----------pc
        (crossover)                   (straight)           (straight)

As i assume it needs to crossover just once as if twice its straight again?

Also, the rj45 ports i have can be wired in 2 ways, A and B. These seem to be colour coding standards, which shall i use?

Thanks, and i hope the forum doesnt mess my lil ascaii drawing tongue.gif

EDIT:oh well it messed it up, basically it shows to use a crossover from the 360 to wall socket, then a straight cable from the socket under floorboards to the other socket, and then a straight to the pc.

Not sure whether to use A or B, but your thinking sounds good to me.
Don't use cheap interconnects or cables since there will be a few connections... it will decrease the performance.

I'm pretty sure the 360 dosen't need to use a crossover cable, but can use a normal ethernet cable instead. The ethernet port can auto-detect and switch or something like that. Right now I use a normal straight through ethernet cable from my 360 to my laptop to go onto Live and it works fine.
