I need some help getting online. First off, I am fairly internet/router savvy, so I know what to try, but it seems nothing works. It always fails at the IP address check. Here is my setup:

Comcast Cable->Linksys BEFCMU10 cable modem->Linksys WRT54g v2 wireless router.

I have tried to connect directly to the cable modem, but no luck, fails at IP check. I tried to connect to the Router, and no luck. I tried to DMZ, port forward....manual and automatic settings, still no luck. I even went out and bought the Xbox Wireless Networking adaptor...it will find and connect to my wireless network, but still wont get an IP address. I have the correct firmware on my router, that xbox says it supports, but  I still cannot connect, even with UPnP off. Can anyone help me get online? I sent an email to customer service, but the response was so incoherent and misspelled, I think they dont speak english in thier customer service dept....

I will gladly name my firstborn after anyone who can get my console online.....

First off, if you can't connect through your cable modem directly, I wouldn't bother with trying to connect through the router.  Now, when you hook it up directly to you cable modem, did you reset the cable modem?  Cable modems remember mac addresses of the last component to be connected until they are reset.  So unplug cable modem, wait 30 seconds, plug it back in.  Wait till it gets solid, plug xbox in.  Turn xbox 360 on and see if you can connect to live.  If it can, then you have to see about compatibility with your router, maybe nat fowarding, and check your router logs.  If it can't, you got some other problems.

Well, I took your advice, and decided to start off simple and try and get an IP through the modem first. I unplugged the modem and the Xbox, and let it sit for a few mins. I then plugged in the modem and let it get a signal and light up. Then I turned on the xbox and tried the test.........No luck!

So, I looked around the options, and saw a setting for Restore Default Settings...Well, all my settings were on Automatic still, so I figured it woulnd't change anything, but I gave it a try. Well, after hitting that option, I tried to connect again, and low and behold it connected me. I can't believe that I missed it and it was so simple. I am not sure what the default settings change, but it worked. I was also shocked that I never saw that to be reccomnded anywhere online. Not the Xbox or MS site, or any fourms I have read.

So, if you can't get an IP address, try to reset the defualt settings option in the network settings screen. It worked for me. Plus, I was able to use the wireless adaptor with no problem, so I may just run it wired from now on, and sell my adaptor....maybe someone else needs one....

Something has to do with the default settings. Somehow is didnt let me get an IP address from it. But, once I reset the default setigns and tried again, it worked. I am thinking if flushed some cache or something like that and allowed it to get an IP from then. Now it works great, even from behind my 2 routers and the modem now! No port fowarding needed....

It was not set to look to dhcp for an address. Plain and simple that's all it was and that's all it could have been. It's ok. Everyone makes mistakes like this from time to time.

silly question but how do i set it for dhcp??
