Migrating From Xb To 360

When I get my 360 on Dec 2nd, I also have my normal Xbox Live account so I will obviously be migrating it over.

Now... my account runs out on Dec 12th - will I be able to add the 30 day Gold trial to this amount or is it the "Brand New Customers Only" system like the adverts on UK TV?

And if not, should I get a normal Xbox Live 12 month pack for like £30 now or get he 360 Gold pack for the usual £40 with the headset since most people say it will break easily.
