Xbmc 1.1 Won't Run Off Cd
« on: October 26, 2004, 08:34:00 AM »

Hello
I had XBMC 1.0 running fine off CD-RW, yet if I format the disc and burn 1.1, nothing, all I get is black screen
I have copied the exact same disc to the HD and it works fine
Any one got any ideas?
Thanks

XBMC is not designed to be run from CDRW.

What you MAY be able to do is make sure in your XBoxMediaCenter.xml, all references to directories (such as the albums dir, and thumbnails + subs directories) are on your xbox harddisk.  It MIGHT (possibly) work in that case.

Basically, it is a mediacenter.  It is designed to be used from the harddisk.  <

At the moment I am copying it to my HD every time I use it, but i'm worried about leaving stuff on my HD when I play on Live

Should I be worried?

No, you shouldn't be. Besides, XBMC has a save file in your game saves directory, so it's not like if MS was scanning HDD files, they wouldn't know, even if you were running it off a disc.  <

But what about leaving the whole thing on my HD?

I though it was possible to run from removable media.

The FAQ on thier site says:

QUOTE
Q: Can I put XboxMediaCenter + clips/movies on a CD or DVD media and boot from it?
A: Yes, as long as the CD/DVD is written in a format the Xbox™ can read (i.e. UDF128/xISO).
PS! You can't boot the Xbox™ with ISO9660 format, it needs to be UDF128 or xISO format. However if you have XBMC installed on the harddrive as primary dashboard then it will still start.
Note! Most Xbox DVD-ROM dives are Thomson or Philips which cannot read CD-R media

I tried the same thing, only a blank screen.
I also tried setting the home path to d: and all files to save to e: in the config and still get a blank screen.  <

The reason is that it needs to write to it's root folder, for logging purposes primarily.  Someone needs to set it up so that it can write it's log files elsewhere if the user so wishes, or at least set it up so that it doesn't require the log files to be created.

Until this is done, it will not be bootable off CDRW.  <

you would think when you set the loglevel to 7 it wouldn't try and write one.

considering in the comments above it says log level 7 = none.....

1.1 stil wouldn't boot for me when trying it set on 7.....  <

It doesn't really matter. Either way, MS would know if they were scanning HDD's. And if you've read the XS news, it seems that they might be scanning HDD's, but I'm not sure if they're scanning for files or if they're just looking at the HDD model number.  <
