Noob Cooling Question...
« on: July 18, 2010, 08:15:00 PM »

Hi all...

I'm looking for advice on which cooling option(s) to pursue.  I understand that there are many possibilities, and I wonder what others have done that proved to be most successful.

Here's all I've done so far

1) Shroud mod:  Added flap to divide airflow and one on top of GPU to help keep heat away from the DVD drive.  This is kicking out some nice air on both sides.  In fact, the GPU is marginally hotter.
2) Replaced stock fan with whisper max:  (despite what some people say, it's MUCH quieter than my old one, and the airflow difference is very noticable I think)
3) Cut the metal mesh in the back:  Another noticable difference!
4) Heatsinks on RAM, southbridge, ANA chips

I'd like to add some intake fans, or do the 12v mod, but I'm not gonna lie... I have zero soldering skills.  (Again, I'm a noob smile.gif )

I was wondering if anybody has tried the XCM core cooler V2.. is it worth it?  Frankly I'm a little iffy about hooking something up that draws power from the DVD.  Are there any other "snap-in" fans that will work?  Or should I just suck it up and ask a friend to get the soldering iron out?  smile.gif

Thanks in advance for any help.
