Playing Dvds From Hard Drive
« on: October 19, 2004, 10:20:00 PM »

im sure this is on here somewhere, but i couldnt seem to find it. What I want to do is have my dvds on my hard drive and selectable like the albums in my music. I ripped the entire scarface dvd to my hdd and it took up over 7 gigs, and the only way i can get it to play is to run VTS_01_0.ifo can anyone help me with a more efficient way of doing this? thanks  <

I know that atleast the newest version of XBMC will play dvds in an .iso or .img kind of format, so if you can rip your dvd as an iso, you can just select that.  <

I've also had success using the iso straight from my PC networked to the XBox .. img files work too, but a couple of them wouldn't play for some reason.
I also mount a virtual drive on my PC, share it out, then play iso/img files from the network share.  <

aviformat is not a dvd on the hardrive that is an avi on the harddrive. That is like saying an mp3 is a wav. Its not. Avi's are supported through mplayer. Ripping a dvd and then converting to avi is an extra step. A ripped dvd would be strictly the Video_TS folder on the xbox harddrive.  <

Converting to avi by using divx or xvid is very efficient for hard drive space but also degrades the quality.  It can also cause a bad video (ie, you get it in french)  The best way I have found is to rip the files to your pc, use a program called IFO edit to strip the streams of the movie (look at the names and sizes of the VTS* files.  The longest sequence is typically the main movie, ie VIDEO_TS_03_0.VOB, _1.VOB, _2.VOB.   The main movie typically adds up to 3-6 GIG)  Use the option to create new VOBs and fix the navigation and you will getnew VTS_01 files which will be only the movie.  Select VTS_01_0.IFO in XBMC and it will play with the correct language.  <
