UPDATE: Any Skin dated older than 12-Dec-2004 will NOT work.

The default skin for XBMC is Project Mayhem since a few months back, due to legal issues with the old mediacenter skin.

If you have problems with new builds of xbmc, PLEASE delete the E:\TDATA\0face008 folder and reboot.

You should now have a default install of XBMC (make 100% sure you have Project Mayhem skin installed!) and gone are the frezzes you experienced.
