Maxtor Or Western Digital?
« on: January 06, 2005, 06:25:00 PM »

One of my friends that is experienced with modding is telling me to get a maxtor hdd for my xbox. He says its not required but you should get a maxtor. The guy that is installing my modchip is only selling western digital hdd's. So tell me, what brand is better and which one SHOULD i get? Maxtor or Western Digital?

It depends on preference really. I have used both and they work equally well. I am currently using a Maxtor. If I had to choose I would go with Maxtor.

You get the same product essentially, yet OEM is cheaper and you wont get a retail box and manual. Who needs a box anyway ?  tongue.gif or a manual for that matter ..hehe

well, i have had no trouble ever with my western digital drives, and i have heard lots of reports of maxtors being shitty drives. i know i personally don't trust them, and have never heard of anyone having an issue with western digitals. myself and all of my friends have western digital's in our xbox's (except for 1 with an IBM harddrive), and none of us have ever had issues.

also, for some odd reason, oem HDs usually have a 3 year warrantee, and retail have 1 year...

get a seagate HD - 5 year warrantee, and they are uber quiet cool.gif

buuuut, if i had to choose between maxtor and WD. i would choose wd all day long.

of all the HD's ive ever seen, maxtor have failed about twice as much as WDs

but, you should be fine as long as you dont get an IBM ph34r.gif

Both drive rock! I will say that. They really dont fail unless in a massive writing enviroment like a pc, but there are some issues.

1) Maxtors get loud and hot.
Ill try to take some pictures, but I have a spot on the HDD tray of my xbox where the bottom of a 80gig maxtor has left a tatto of its self. Drive works fine, I just fliped it over and up a fan on it.

2) WD have some issues with storage.
The company I work for actually has a policy in the IT dept that we will not buy Western Digital Hard drives. Now this decesion dosent come from a looney like Howard Hughes, but actually from a quild of other companies in the same fieild after parts have failed.
I will say though. What we do to thoese drives is horrid. On a given day, id say around 30gig is created and moved.

So really, just make sure you read up on the specif model you want. Currently I have a surplus of Maxtor 80gig 6Y080P0 and 6Y080L0 drives that I have been tossing into boxes right and left. A little loud, but cheap and exfective.

Thank god someone finally knows what's going on.

I agree with rastoma. WD drives have the worst failure rate that I've ever seen of any other drive. Now I haven't seen 5k drives install in a year, but I've seen plenty. Now, that doesn't mean that a WD drive won't run forever, but percentage wise, new drives failure more often within the first few months, than any other drive I've ever seen.

I've had bad luck with all kinds of other drives. But not nearly as frequently.
