Just replace the laser in your drive or clean/relube the spindle motor, that's most likely all that's wrong with it. Plenty of tutorials in the Newbie Chat and Technical DVD-ROM sections on how to replace the drive with another one, and Laser replacement tutorials are in my Sig.

Ok, I don't want to replace the laser, I want a new drive as I'm thinking of chipping it or something.  I don't/can't use my original as it has this glue/resin on it (love from microsoft lol).  Also I don't wanna it up so at least I have a half working backup, if need be I shall replace the laser and wotnot.

I am quite confident that I can fit a different branded drive in it I'm just worried as I heard the elite has different firmware to the originals and therefore unable to change to different branded DVD drives.

So my main questions are "Can I go on xbox live with a replaced dvd drive?  And what about if it is a different brand?"
and "Can I change DVD drives to a different branded in my elite?"

Thanks
p.s. please, no more replies about laser changing, it's not what I'm looking for, but thanks for your efforts, much appreciated.
