it depends on the exact format of the files whether xbox can play them or not. its really crumby im afraid - nowhere near the standard of xbmc. i have tried to play some files and it will download a codec from live for them, but if it doesnt prompt you to do this then its probably just cos it cant play them.

assuming you used the right codecs and everything, you will need to download the optional media update on your xbox 360

Try to play the files while connected to Live.. it will automatically download the update at that time.

Where did you get the MP4 files from? Check with whoever encoded them to find out what codec was used (both audio and video). If you encoded them...well, the same question to you!

We have to pay to use Live, don't we? Sucks really. The wife went out and bought a disk containing all the yummy games like UNO, blah, blah all in one. When we loaded it, it tells us that we need to dial into Live to get the full version. This sucks as I don't have a Live account and don't have a physical NIC connection from the box to the net. Damn.

Xbox LIVE silver is free. the only benefits of a gold account is online play and getting demos a week earlier than silver members
