Possible To De-modify Xbox 360 For Backup Games?
« on: December 10, 2007, 03:44:00 PM »

Hey guys, just would like to apologize in advance if this topic does not fit in here ive looked everywhere on the forums and this appears to be the best spot to post.

Anyhow i am stationed in Baghdad with my Army Unit, i recently got an Xbox 360 from the local Iraqi vendors that come to the base. The guy sold me a modified Xbox 360. I tried gettting one through our PX (Post Exchange) from a neighboring base but they are always out of stock and i cant exactly afford the luxury of going on a convoy through IED infested roads just to go pick one up if they had it. So i caved in and bought a modified one. The guy told me that it is a firmware hack and there are no mod chips installed (I assume the DVD Firmware hack) He does not know what type of it is specifically. So far the Xbox crapped out twice, apparently the DVD Drive was not firmly seated the first two times and then today i got the Rrod after a backup copy of Mass Effect made my 360 crap out (For some reason my original Xbox 360 games didnt do that but now do the same thing, it asks me to check my game disc to see if it is dirty and to clean it) I have two questions.

1. Is there any way for me to find out just what type of DVD Firmware hack was applied to my Xbox 360? (I can provide the DVD Drive information, manufacturer etc...if need be.)

2. Is there any way for the DVD Drive to be re-flashed to the pre-modified status (Can i reflash it so my xbox is not modified to play back up 360 games?) Reason being i would like to take this 360 back to the states when we redeploy and i am worried i will get banned from Xbox live when i come back home as i have been reading stories of people getting the ban hammer with their Xbox's (Even if they are using the original disc's to play on-line, somehow MS has figured out if the System was modified for backups even without the backup disc in the drive)

Thanks alot in advance fella's hope to hear some replies.

SGT K.

P.S. The vendor offered to either....

A. Swap out with another modded 360
B. Repair the DVD Drive
C. Get me an unmodded one instead

So i am leaning towards the unmodded one at the moment.

Yes you can find out what type of hacked firmware has been used on your xbox 360 just by dumping the firmware using toolbox 4.5 if its a hitachi drive and iprep i think for a samsung (sorry im not good with samsung drives but im sure other ppl will correct me).

Yes you can reflash the drive back to its original state if you have the original.bin firmware file that would have been dumped when the drive was flashed with the hacked firmware. If you dont have the original.bin file then you could try and get another original copy of the firmware for your specific drive and change the dvd key to match your xboxs motherboard. If you search around this forum there are loads of tutorials that tell you how to dump the firmware and edit the dvd key.

But to save you all that hassel you swap the modified 360 for an unmodified 360 with the vendor you brought it from. Then there would be no chance of when you get back to the united states of being banned.

I hope this helps.
