I apologize for the late response. I travel alot and sometimes do not have alot of time.
No you do not need the serial. The purpose to the 1234567 12345 is just to make its own folder and seperate it from others.
For example: Say you use a USB stick which will prolly be 1g or more, so you can save alot of stuff to it. Well say you mod your box and name it 1234567 12345 then you mod your buddies box with the same numbers it would overwrite or abort. You would actually wanna change it when you mod your buddies box to something like 1234567 11222 so when you look at the drive later you know yours is 1234567 12345 and his is 1234567 11222.
That is the only purpose to this. Some people use their serial number on their xbox (ie People who mod tons of box's for money) this helps them make sure they get the right firm with the right box. For someone most likely like me or you, its just easier to do 1234567 12345.
That VCC way you mentioned is kinda dangerous. Some peopl may state different but that person is probably comfortable soldering. This way is very easy and you take no chances at all with screwing your box up.
I wrote this tutorial because I spent 3 days reading about this stuff and all had different ways. If you are lik me and hate searching for hours on end and finding stuff that is not very accurate it kinda ticks ya off. In turn people get tired of it, then post to the forums asking about it to make the process quicker then getting flamed for it. The problem I have with that is basically start fixing it at the source and not fixing loose ends lol. For Example: When you post make sure its accurate and provide detail so that you don't get asked many questions.
Anyhow I got off on a rant there, (I don't like flamers), I think its much better to just answer what they are asking for instead of causing a fuss and still not accomplishing your goal.
I really hope this helps people. If you have any questions please by all means ask me anything and I will do my best to help you.

i have onboard sata, ASUS P4SD-LA mother board. Intel chip set...i think. Its a HP a250n
okay followed all steps just as is... when i get to the dos promt turn on xbox type samread 1234567 12345 i see
Bad command or File name
directory already exists
directory alreadt exists
1. ICH5 Sec master
2. ICH5 Sec slave
3. xtreme sec master
4. xtreme sec slave
turn off xbox, select 3 (i think this is the sata port my xbox is hooked up on) and wait 10 seconds.
when i select any of the drives it says
port: c00, master/slave: a0
then just hangs there. Does not atempt to write anything to the a drive, although when i boot back into windows i can see the 2 folders (1234567 and 12345) under backups on my floppy.
i have made several floppys all say bad command or file name after typing sam read. and all hang the system up after selecting a drive. I read somewhere that my onboard sata was compat. but i keep gettin stuck here. Any help.....
if all else fails ill run out and buy the 6421 sata card
Your problem here is your chipset. With an MS25 Drive this would be fine. But with a MS28 You need the VIA chipset. I also did the same thing you did (tried to use onboard) it sees it but can not write to it. Stop there, stop bothering and buy the card I mentioned above. This will solve your problem.

my problem is getting into dos at the start up i sed to boot from floppy and it says retry and enter nothing happens , chow can i boot from a dvd rom the files are on my dvd and on floppy neither of them seem to work
Did you use xtreme boot maker and select your floppy drive?
It would be a waste to burn this to a DVD. A CD would be much better and preferably a usb drive. Check to make sure your floppy disk is good and you flopp is working.
As far as bios goes, there are many different bios makers and each have thier own interface. Just a ballpark idea of what you need to look for tho is: Boot Priority, Boot From, Boot From other devices, Boot Sequence, well thats all I can think of that I have seen. Make sure to search your bios thoroughly, this may take a few minutes but it could save you some time and head ache.

I am having problems getting Xtreme Boot Maker VO.3.6.1422 to work with the
Rosewill Sata PCI Controller - Model Number: RC-212 - Chipset 6421A
installed the vraid_driver_v540a.zip using NT5 driver viamraid.sys
that you mentioned earlier
The error I am getting is when I try and get the program to Detect ID - I/O
It states that-
This device is not compatible with MTKFlash
Am I doing something wrong? Help please
Make sure you select use custom MTK option and that your via card is selected. Then click detect I/O it should fill in the boxes, then check the 2 MS compatibility options.
You said you installed the drivers thru a zip file. I am assuming you did this thru the device manager. You might want to use their installer. This is how I did it. Device manager is what I normally use to install my devices, but sometimes thier is software that adds features to the cards that you would not have by using device manager. In windows after you install the software you should have a yellow icon down near your clock that looks like 2 drives stacked that with your mouse over it says: VIA RAID Tool.
I assume this is your most probable cause for this problem.
If you guys do not get a reply right away please don't worry, I will get to them I assure you just add this post to your favorites.
Just FYI, I will be posting a fully documented manual for backing up games. Just a heads up, it will be in your best interest to purchase a SAMSUNG SH-D163A DVD DRIVE from EBAY. They run about 50 bucks. These will become slim to none very soon. I bidded on 5 of them before I won one. I'm sure you have heard the saying "You Snooze, You loose" well that is 100% fact on this.
