Xbox 360 -> 19" 4:3 Lcd Monitor Via Vga?
« on: April 04, 2006, 07:45:00 PM »

I'm thinking about getting a 360, and theres no way in hell i'm gonna buy a hdtv anytime soon because I watch 1 hour of tv/week. I was just thinking of using my 19" lcd as the display using the VGA adapter...

So hows this work...

Dose the VGA cable send a  high def signal but uses 4:3 versus WS?

If it dose send a high def signal, can you switch to WS and have 2 black bars (top and bottom), or is it stuck on 4:3?

OR!!! Dose it just send a Standard def signal in 4:3?

And hows the picture? I head people saying its like HD, and *sometimes better*... whatever that means.

Anyone know the resolution the 360 sends to the LCD? My native res is 1280x1024...

This has been bugging me... someone help me out!

Standard and High-definition gaming output in the following VGA formats:
640 x 480, 848x480, 1024 x 768, 1280 x 720, 1280 x 768, 1280 x 1024, and 1360 x 768
I say stick with the native format. Some games will be widescreen, some will be fullscreen.  it's up to the developer to decide the aspect ratio... i think
whatever the ratio, it will look amazing with the 1280x1024

to put this in perspective, I had an old(1998) RCA 54(or 52)" 4:3 rear projection tele that I loved.  I hooked up my 360 via component video  and thought it was a good picture.  well, I decided to buy a new Samsung 50 DLP to catch up to current technology.  I ended up selling my RCA and in the mean time, I using my Samsung 930B 19" LCD monitor.  I was skeptical of the connection simply because its VGA not DVI.  Well, I was amazed by the quality.  I only have played FN3 and a few demos, but the quality is amazing!  Definetly would recommend it.  Ive also heard that 360s should be hooked up via VGA on Samsung DLPs to reduce the lag. happy.gif

My lcd is 12ms... is this going to result in blurring/smeering the image?

I too have VGA and DVI ports on my lcd.

The 360 dosent have a DVI adapter yet? right?

Are they ever going to come out with one?

I dunno about DVI. Someone told me its exactly the same as VGA, but i know they're wrong, DVI is much better in quality. I dunno if MS will bring out a DVI adapter, while it would be good, the VGA is already pretty damn good and they may not see the point in making a whole new adapter for DVI.

But it might be possible in the future from the help of the scene. I remember all the things people accomplished on the first xbox from video, there might be a homebrew adapter within the next year?

And about 'blurryness', i honestly have no idea. I used to have my original Xbox plugged via S-Video into my TV card, then to my 15" CRT Monitor. It looked pretty horrible, when you moved quickly, it blurred bigtime, and the quality loss was pretty big. I'd never do that to my 360, mainly cos the VGA adapter is out tongue.gif I just bought a cheap $10 one from ebay, "Dragon VGA Series", works a treat. I don't think you will notice that bad blurring, but maybe a little bit.

Yeah, I had my xbox connected though my tv tuner card and it blured SO bad. But when I play fps games on my pc, and I move the mouse SUPER fast, it never blurs so I assume it was the tv tuner card.

None the less, thanks for all the info guys...  pop.gif
