Have you ever connected the controller to that particular 360? If not, you need to press the "wireless connect" button on the controller, as well as the 360 (the small round button on top of the controller and on the front of the 360). That will sync the controller to the 360 and it will then recognize the controller the next time powered on.....

or you can look at that nifty little thing they give you in the controller and read how to do it...
