you WILL need the x360 HDD to play old xbox games (AKA xbox 1 games) and it is needed really to play on live (as in my view a little memorycard just wont do) sorry bud

You're right, you can play on xbox live.  However, you cannot play xbox 1 games without the hard drive.

The 360 HDD has a virtual Xbox hard drive partitioned into it with a C:, E:, X;, Y:, and Z: for emulating Xbox games.  The only way to get this on the HDD is to either have the one that comes with the premium OR buy the one off the shelf.
The external HDD will act like a storage device...music, video, pictures and the like...but will not function like the 360's.

not even video. an USB HDD will only function for mp3/wma and pictures, nothing else. no saving, no download content, nothing.
