Xbmc Interface
« on: July 08, 2004, 10:54:00 PM »

What's up with the interface of this thing.  I can't figure this thing out.  I boot xbmc and click on my music and nothing's in there...  at all.  Different from xbmp where you click on my music and you see a shoutcast folder which contains all the links and then there's a record button there handy.  I had to go to settings/general/scripts/KMLBrowser.py and click on that to bring up the web radio browser which FINALLY contained the links I was looking for and I finally got some streaming music after I f*ed around for about 1 1/2 hours clicking on everything in the world trying to figure out how to get some freaking streaming music.  And then I can just listen, no record button anywhere that I can find.  I mean, I'm not complaining, there's gotta be some way to save the stream links in my music, or what?  What the F* do you do with thing?  This thing should be set so that the music browser is easy to find from the start up menu.  And then there should be some kind of interface for recording the music and what not.  Am I wrong or what?  What the F* am I missing here?  The interface of this thing should make it easy for someone to find shoutcast streaming music, easy and simple, with a recording option.  As yet, this thing looks mostly like a file browser instead of a media player to me.

I appreciate the new media player.  Someone just fill me in on how the interface works.  I realize this is some kind of test version and there's no manual as yet, but there's gotta be someone who can fill the rest of us in if they're gonna release the player.  Not all us are crack hack programmers, most of us are just end users.  The ease of use of the interface to the end user is a testament to the skill of the writers.  No?  That's not a challenge, just a plea.

The web interface is still being worked on.  Its not at the level XBMP was.  Remember XBMP was at 2.4 before they started working on XBMC, which is now just at 1.0.0.  <

XBMC is very flexible, but that means not everything will be configured for you right "out of the box."

You will need to tell it the locations of media you will be accessing, whether it is local, streaming from a LAN, or streaming from the Internet.

This is the same as XBMP.  Some editing of the xboxmediacenter.xml will be needed for most users.

I'm sure that somewhere along the way, an "XBMC Setup Wizard" will be developed that you can run on your PC, or better yet, on the Xbox, which will auto-generate a settings file to suit your needs.

But until then, there will be a learning curve.  Just like you needed to learn how to *install* XBMC on your Xbox, you will need to learn how to configure the application.  Read the pinned topics and ask questions.  Lots of good information and good minds here.  <
