Does The 360 Have 1 Or 2 Heat Sensors? And...
« on: April 06, 2008, 04:52:00 PM »

Can any one confirm if both GPU & CPU heat is monitored, and if so are the fan speeds controlled independantly? I've read conflicting threads - some say there's only one sensor on the cpu which controls both fans, other say there are two sensors for each fan (some even mentioned cases where the fan wires where the wrong way round ... so heat on the gpu made the cpu fan go faster!).

So - if (and only if) there's one sensor in the cpu which controls both fans - wouldn't it make sense to let the stock thermal paste in place!? This is of lesser quality than AS5, and so the cpu would heat up more (which is usually not an issue - especially on falcons) and the fans go faster!!! (I know i'm taking it too far!)

Also - if one has a brand new falcon console which is going to be case modded anyway (bye bye warranty) would you remove the xclamp (at least from gpu?) - has it been proven 100% the xclamp is at fault?

Cheers!

the fans are independent of each other so i am assuming that the cpu and gpu each have their own temp diode (or however they read it)

you can click on the link in sig - it talks about this very issue/feature in one of the posts

Theres 1 temp sensor, its on the CPU.

Ever done the 3 Red Light fix?  Try this: only place the fans over the CPU, while letting the GPU overheat.

It WILL NOT trip the temp sensor (2 red lights) if you keep the CPU cool.  Let the CPU hot and watch / hear the fans spin up.

/end

So - if that's the case i'm right to say that better cooling on the cpu could potentially hinder the gpu !!! Hmn!

No disrespect but thats not completely correct...
I think there are at least 2 temperature sensors, one in the GPU and the other in the CPU...
However the CPU temp-sensor controls the fan's voltage as you said...
Yet there must also be a sensor in the GPU as the GPU would just keep running until it melts if there wasnt any.
If you ever used the llamma method to bake your xbox you would know that.
You manually cool the CPU so that the xbox doesnt get the 2 red lights too quickly for CPU overheating (secondary error code 0011) as you want to overheat the GPU to its maximum.
When you finally made it after 20-30 minutes you will get the 2 red lights for GPU overheating (secondary error code 0012).
So if your assumption was correct the xbox would not recognize that the GPU is overheating and would leave it running until it dies...
There might also be further sensors for the RAM as there is another errorcode for RAM overheating(0013), however I never tried to overheat the RAM so I cant say much about that

... but even if that's correct, and only the cpu sensor controls fan speed - wouldn't what I'm saying make sense!?

... also ... I was thinking of adding thermal pads (gap filler) between gpu heatsink and the cpu heatsink (on a falcon it's easier) .. that way some heat will be transferred from the gpu sink to the cpu sink !! might not transfer a lot but could help no?

This guy did something like that, he added a heatpipe that connects the heatsinks...

hmn - that's interesting ... i thought it would make a bigger difference! ... the 7v mod seems to be the best option percentagewise!!
