Guess ill just try the laser 1st and if thats a no go then ill just buy the whole drive.

Before you go buying a new laser:

Have you tried the following?


1) Cleaning the Lens with a Q-Tip and rubbing alcohol
2) Cleaning the metal rails off of ALL junk
3) Adjusting the DVD Pot

I've fixed literally hundreds of drives, and the VAST majority of them can be fixed without replacing parts.  Also try flashing a slower drive speed if its having trouble, and switch to better quality media if your not using it.

To answer your other questions, yes you can just swap PCB boards out and it will stay flashed (as the firmware is on the PCB)
