My 2 Red Ring Problem

Background:

Was hit with the rrod, and performed the xclamp removal. As soon as I turned it on, I did not have to wait for the 3 rings to disappear and the 2 minutes for the two red lights to come up. The Box booted up, spun green and turned to two red lights right away. I let it sit there baking, but I'm pretty sure there is no heat production coming out. Left it there sitting like that for 5 minutes and tried putting it back together to boot it up. Got the two rings. Tried baking it within the case, still 2 rings. The problem is I don't know how to bake it, since when it has 2 red lights it refuses to produce any heat. If I leaved it unplug, it works but wont bake cause it shuts off automatically.

Took everything apart, tightened the bolts, and nothing. I did apply some thermal compound (not artic silver, some basic stuff I got from radioshack...) and I don't know if I put enough (put a blob).

What can I do next?

tl;dr: RRod->xclamp->2 rings->doesnt work

I should add another thing, I used 12mm M5 bolts cause it was the smallest size i could find, yet I screwed it in really tight with washers and everything, nothing was loose.

my guess  is that they are too tight let em loose a lil see what happens

If it instantly thinks the 360 has overheated, it could be:

- X-Clamp screws are too tight/loose
- too much thermal paste
- not enough thermal paste (or it's lousy paste)

Try tightening and/or loosening the screws first to see, though.

i have the (had the) same problem. All i did was re-coat the thermal paste and it worked fine.

Tried taking them off, reapplying thermal compound and tightened them back up. Also tried loosening the screws like you suggested, same thing, two lights. Any other suggestions?

I think it might be the compound. Specifically, it's called Heat Sink Compound, Silicone-Based by Nexxtech. That's all that's written on the label.

Also I think it may have been that I haven't been able to bake it and resolder the points? My dilemma from this is I don't think I can bake it...the most I can do is leave it on with the two lights, but it doesn't make any noise, it just sits there, so I don't know if its producing heat.

2 red lights instantly means your heatsinks aren't touching the chips. You may have too much thermal paste, it should be a paper-thin (even) layer. Try using less washers, 2 is often too many under the heatsink, depending on the thickness.

took off alot of thermal paste, took off one less metal washer, same problem.

Is it possible that my screws are too long? I'm using 12mm M5's cause I couldn't find any 10 mm's locally. I can't think of any other reason, I've tried tight, loose, in between. I'm dry for ideas. One thing is that is that I don't think I ever got my 360 to bake yet since removing the xclamps, but there's no way I can do that from what I can see.

You don't need to "bake" the system. 12mm might be too long. Look at it like this - if you tighten the bolts all the way, and there isn't a gap between the tip of the bolt and the "offset" (for lack of a better term) of the heatsink, as in your bolt's tip is being stopped by the fins of the heatsink, then they're too long. Once you put the sink back in place and bolt it down, there should be no give to it.
