Xbox 360 X-clamp Replacement, But A Permanent Fix?
« on: January 30, 2008, 07:36:00 PM »

Hello Guys, I've repaired about 10 or so Xbox 360's for friends, most of them with success.  I have about 3-4 guys who have been running the Xbox's for over 6 months, no issues.  The rest of them have had to be repeatedly re x-clamped.  I used Lawdawg's method.  Two of these systems, after redoing the entire method are not able to work properly, no 3 red rings but they freeze after an hour or less of use.  I don't think my GPU overheating is the problem because I installed an 80mm fan above the CPU blowing in cool air.  The GPU after the freeze isn't even very hot compared to what I've seen before.  I'm wondering if there's anything anyone can give me for guidance on these systems that seem to freeze but I don't think it's GPU related.  Again whenever I redo lawdawg's method, I do the WHOLE thing (cleanup the thermal paste, apply new AS5.. hell I even throw in new washers and screws just incase, but tops after redoing it is about 7 days of 6hrs a day of use.)  Is there something I'm missing?  Does anyone have any ideas?  Thanks!

Xbox 360 X-clamp Replacement, But A Permanent Fix?

Hi,

Just a summary from other threads...(more or less)...

The Xclamp works because it puts force down on the contacts that have broken or become damaged in some way....  What it doesn't do is correct the other warping that occurs in other areas of the motherboard....

This is what led others to develop the eraser fix and 3Penny fix...as those fixes put pressure in the opposite direction when butted up against the metal chassis there helping to re-establish contacts for the chips that are "damaged"....

And then some motherboards are probably actually fried...for one reason or another where a chip has actually broken or was weak to begin with...

I'm new to fixing the 360 (I've tried the X-Clamp replacement and penny fix but neither work), but where are the "pressure points" on the board before you do the X-Clamp replacement? (the area that the penny trick is supposed to work on?)

What the penny trick is supposed to do is put better connections and pressure directly on the ram.  The ram is also connected to the board via BGA and my thoughts are that when you do the X-Clamp replacement, it puts extra opposing force for the ram, and this can be corrected by using the penny trick in conjunction with the x-clamp replacement.  Am I correct in saying this?
