Error Code 0020 And 0021
« on: January 15, 2008, 03:54:00 AM »

I have been researching for 2 days now, looking for an answer or something I havn't tryed, on how to fix these errors.  I can easily get it out of 0020 and into 0021, but I can't seem to find a clear answer on what to try fix 0021.

I have put washers on top of ram chips under GPU htsink, tried it with 2 washers and 3 washers on the x-clamp replacement.  Done the 12 penny fix, and the 8 penny fix.  I'm runnning out of options and ideas.  I don't want to heat gun it.  Everything I have read basically says the heat gun and baking is a very bad idea.

Baking is a bad idea (unless it's a pro using a reflow oven of course), but if you're careful, then heat gun can fix your system. It fixed mine (0020 and 0102).

I have a console that i am working on right now also.  I have done everything you have done, but i have also heatgunned it.  From my experience of the towel, (i know i know lol at me) it worked.  So it has to be with something to do with the heatsinks not putting enough pressure on the motherboard... try tightening down a little bit.  My console error 'was' 0102, tightend xclamps, now its 0020.  I will try the ram chip like you, if no luck i will HEATGUN my xbox 360 and tell you if i have any luck.  Best of luck

error 0020 is caused by a gpu power connection error , some times x clamp replacement fix it , but the most cases is not solved this way ,reflaw , or heat gun if you know where and how to heat , i dont recommend this for newbies at all

Hi,

The 12 penny fix is not an absolute....it seems to depend on your individual system.  I ended up using 1 penny and double-sided foam tape over each RAM underbelly chip.  Then the motherboard had to be screwed down along the perimieter or it would still give 3ROD error.  Once it was fully secure, it came back to life !!

Other folks have had to dicker with their screws for the various XClamp fixes until they got it just right...

Now if it stays alive !!!

I just bought an xbox on ebay with error 0102. It was never opened or tampered with. I've fixed several before with the same error so I didn't think I would have a problem. I opened it up and removed the x clamps, cleaned the thermal paste and blasted with the heat gun. Put in my washers and bolts (like i usually do) and now it's giving error 0021. It can't be the dvd drive because I still get 0021 without the drive connected.

I heard this has something to do with the southbridge but i've already baked the whole board nicely, I don't get it? Is this an unfixable hardware failure??

The southbridge codes are very ambiguous.  It's possible that you damaged the board with the heatgun, or that one of the capacitors on the bottom of the board fell off.  There's a thread regarding e74 and e73 error codes which discovered this problem recently.
