The Fan Shroud Mod From Rbjtech - Need Help!

doesnt nail polish remover have acetone in it? and doesnt it leave some residue? it might not be making the as5 as effective. if you cant find 90%+ alcohol, then just use 70% to get the nail polish remover residue off. the 70% alcohol leaves a little residue but not much. usually after replacing the x-clamps i take a 30 min break, clean up the work area, and prepare for satisfaction. if your doing lawdawgs method, i usuallt tighten the screws snug, then 1/8 - 1/4 more. i usually put locktite so it doesnt get loose, ive been flamed for doing so. but i dont care.. longest box so far has been running fine since May 2007, no hic ups at all.

I guess when I get home, I'll see if it's working now that everything is set.
If not, I'll first apply the Air Duct Fan Shroud method to see if that helps.
If that doesn't help, I'll redo the Thermal Paste and see what happens.
If that doesn't help either, I'll replace the X-Clamps as well. (Yes, I'm following Lawdawg's method)

Not sure if I have any other options - but I'm hoping one of these will get rid of the Overheating.

Ave,

Good News!!

3RROD: Gone!
2 Flashing Red Lights: Gone!
Turbo Fans: Kinda Gone - Loud, Fast, but not Turbo by any means!

Here's what I did:

When I got back home and turned it on, Fans were full blast Turbo - I thought they'd explode, however, I never got the 2 Flashing Red Lights - I had the console on for about 30 minutes - Even played on it for a little bit - It never shut off with the 2 Red Lights! But I decided to turn it off.

I took it apart and I did two things ...
  • I took off all the 8 Black Screws for the GPU/CPU Heatsink, as suggested by Kidderboot, author of the 3 Penny Fix!
  • I used Index Cards and did the fan shroud mod as detailed by RBJTech, to divide & seal airflow from the heatsinks.
I hooked everything back up, sealed off the console, left it alone for a good 30 minutes while I cleared my work area. Finally, turned it back on - No 3RROD, No 2 Red Lights - it booted up the Dashboard instantly. The fans got loud and fast - but not Turbo by any means!! Half of what they were doing before the Screws/Shroud thing I did.

I hooked everything back up and the Console ran for 3 & a half straight hours without any interruption, lights, shutting off or any problems at all. In fact I noticed Fans would go up & down, not stay Loud during the whole time. I don't know what out of the two things I did (Screws / Shroud Mod) fixed the problem, but I didn't have to do anything else - didn't need to redo thermal paste or replace X-Clamps! This is a sole 3 Penny Fix!!

At this point I have to consider it fixed! I'm not getting my hopes up too high, but if something did happen, I still have methods to perform, i.e., redo thermal paste, x-clamp replacement! But for now it seems to be working and working fine!

Thanks guys - appreciate all the help. I'll keep you guys updated with what's going on.

great to hear you got it working again. personally if i went as far as replacing the thermal paste i would have went all the way with the x-clamp replacement, since the clamps put upward pressure on the motherboard. but yeah if you got it working then great. at least youll have other methods down the road. just keep your 360 cool and you shouldnt have to worry about the 3 red lights. cut out that metal mesh.. its a must.

That's the next thing I'm going to do! While I'll reserve X-Clamp & Thermal Paste Replacement for the next time I get 3RLOD or 2RLOD - I'll definately be removing that mesh, perhaps this weekend.

Quite honestly, I think it's the Fan Shroud Mod that I did using those index cards, dividing airflow and sealing airflow, that helped the Overheating. I had played the screws before and that hadn't helped the cause. So I gotta give that one to RBJTech - but don't know for sure.

Anyhow, it's working for now.
Thanks!
