Very Weird Overheating Issue!
« on: January 07, 2008, 09:20:00 AM »

Right, I apologise in advance for this wall of text, but I am totally confused by the issue im having.

First some basics. My Xbox is a PAL Core Launch model.  Well I say launch, im on my third as it was replaced twice in the first 2 months of owning it, either way its a good 2 years old now.  It has a Hitachi drive which is flashed, and is banned from Live.  Dont know if any of that is relevent to the issue though.

Anyway the problem. The 360 Overheats and gets two red lights after about 15 mins of play. This issue has only started during the last 2 days.  However the weird part is that it ONLY overheats when playing an Original game disc. My backups play fine.  A few examples....

I have Original copies of Guitar hero 2 and 3, as well as a backup of Guitar hero 3 which I ripped myself, and a backup of Guitar hero 2 with custom songs (this is downloaded for the custom songs, however I assumed thats ok since I own the original GH2 as well, I apologise if thats against the rules....)

Anyway, I can play the backup GH3 or GH2 for hours on end, with no issue. However, I put the Original version of GH2 or 3 in and it overheats and crashes after 10/15 mins.  This makes no sense to me.   As a test I played my Original GH3 until it overheated, then restarted the box and played the backup. Now in this time it should not have had time to cool down, yet it then played for 45 mins with no issues using the back. I then put the original in and it locked up after 10 mins, again with the 2 red lights.

As you can understand, I am totally confused as logically this makes no sense at all!

I havent had chance to test any of my other Original games on as they are at my parents house at the moment and I cant get hold of them for a few days, but any help into this bizzare problem is appreciated!

I just made a post a few below this one entitled 360 overheating.

after reading this post I decided to turn on my 360 with the drive open, and see what happens.

before I read this and tried with the drive open, my 360 would shut down giving me 2 red lights after less than 2 minutes everytime.

so I booted with the tray open, and have played a few demos, surfed through marketplace, scanned a couple of movies on my PC, and am now streaming music from PC.

It has been on for about 15 minutes now, with now problems, but as soon as I put a disc in, or even close the drive without a disc...bam red lights.

wtf? maybe I should just flash it and make copies of all the games I got, and give this one to the kids and get myself another one.

I believe this is some kindve BS that they (microdicks) have unintentionally done in the last update?

best of luck to you brother, but I just wanted to thank you for posting this, because you posting this saved me 100$, they wanted to charge me, but after I read your post and found out mine wouldnt overheat with the tray open, and called em back telling them that it was because of their latest update... now they are fixing it for free, as they shouldve in the first place.

thx,and best of luck to you.
