Xbox 360 Freezes?
« on: January 05, 2008, 09:41:00 AM »

Hi all.

Today I wanted to play Friday Night Round 3.
I started the Xbox 360 and it started O.K. I got to the choosing players screen and then it stuck, Never Happened before so I turned it off and on, The XBOX 360 turned on and I heard some strange sounds from the speakers and then it froze again.
I disconnected everything and opened the XBOX 360, Everything looks pretty good. I started the XBOX 360 when the case is open and loaded Burnout Revenge (I thought it has something to do with the disc) the game loaded just fine and I started to play. after 5 min the xbox froze again.
I took 120 mm fan and connected it to a computer near by and put it on the XBOX 360's big heat sink, Everything was in the room temperature something like 18c and the new fan blew a lot of cold air on the heat sink and all the system. Turn it again and Burnout revenge again loaded just fine. after 5 min the game froze again. I removed everything and used electric contacts cleaner I sprayed it all over the XBOX 360's motherboard and waited for about 10-20 min. Again the XBOX 360 loaded the game without any problem and after 10 min it froze again. I thought it must be the Xbox 360's PSU. I used hack a day's guide how to use ATX power supply to power on the XBOX 360. I took a Hec 300 ART power supply pretty good psu that can supply the XBOX 360 with everything it needs. The unit turned on without any problem with the new power supply and again after a few minutes the unit froze,
When the unit is freezing and I am restarting the XBOX 360 2 things can happen.
1.The XBOX 360 is powered on and freezes after a few seconds. Even if the 120mm fan is working.
2. 3 Rings of death (No!!!!!!).

Now I really don't know what to try, Everything worked great I finished Halo 3 and Graw 2 on this XBOX 360.
Me and my brother are playing FNR3 pretty often with out any glitches, All the Capacitors look good. And even the XBOX 360 is connect to a power socket with Lightning and surges protector so there weren't any problems with the power from the wall socket.

Please if there is anything else that I can do to fix it. Any guide or something to try. I will use Google to look for similar problems.

Thank you.
*Now the system is turned off with nothing connect to it. I will try to leave it like that for 24 hours and will try again. I know there is a very small chance that this will fix the problem but I really don't know what next do to?!?!.

You need to replace the x-clamps. There are 3 main methods for doing this. The two in the tutorials section are very popular. However, I personally think Tortuga's version is the best one:

Read up on all of them and see what best suits you.

I also endorse tortuga's method, it's quick to do, and there is no guesswork involved on how many washers to use, just make the thread, put the nuts, done. Has worked for me many times.

Guys, do not recommend the XClamp mod unless the console has been previously modded and opened. If not, send it to Microsoft. Xbox Live was having problems these past two weeks and it is known it can freeze the Xbox. Still, the X Clamp method is not permanent and WILL fail.

It's clearly stated in the first post that the box has already been opened. I wouldn't have recommended xclamp replacement if it was still in warranty.

Hi guys.

Thanks for the guide on how to.
The XBOX 360 is open so I don't have any warranty, If I had I would send it to Microsoft and let them deal with the unit.

Now what happens when I am turning the XBOX 360 on I am getting 3 rod.  The 3 lights are blinking all the time. D1 D2 D3. D4 stays off. What is the error code for this 3 ROD.

I will try the guide that you gave me.

How to find your error code:

The specific type of hardware failure can be determined by a "hidden" error code
• Turn the xbox 360 on, and wait till the 3 red lights are flashing.
• Press and hold the sync up button (the small white one), while holding that button press the eject button.
• The LEDs will now blink the first number in the code (as described below).
• Release the eject button and press it again.
• The LEDs will now blink the second number of the code.
• Release the eject button and press it again.
• The LEDs will now blink the third number of the code.
• Release the eject button and press it again.
• The LEDs will now blink the forth number of the code.
• Release the eject button and press it again.
• The LEDs will go back to the 3 red flashing lights.
You should be able to determine the difference between the 3 flashing lights and the error code lights by the rate in which they flash.

Here is how you interpret the LEDs to get the code number:
• All four lights flashing - 0
• One light flashing - 1
• Two Lights flashing - 2
• Three lights flashing - 3
0001 power supply problem
0002 power supply problem
0003 (not yet known)
...
0010 over heating
0011 over heating - If you are recieving this error after dissassembling your console make sure to all 8 of the heatsync screws are tightened securely to the board/heatsink holes.
0012 over heating
0013 over heating
...
0020 (Not yet known, possibly overheating)
0021 DVD Drive Time out - Can be caused by problems with a firmware flash. This is also speculated to sometime be caused by a problem with the southbridge chipset on the motherboard.
0022 GPU Error / GPU Overheating
...
0101 (not yet known)
0102 unknown error - literally means the console does not know what is wrong. possibly a short or cold solder joint somewhere. So far there is 1 major theory for what causes most of these errors is that the Ram, CPU, or GPU are not soldered properly to the mother board This can be solved by re-Heating the chips DO NOT attempt this if your console is still under warranty. If your console is still under warranty return it to the store where it was purchased or call MS to have it replaced.
...
0110 Memory Error / Memory Overheating - see solution for error 0102
...
1003 Hard Drive Error... It could be a problem with the Hard Drive itself or a problem with the internal connection to the hard drive, Try removing the hard drive and playing without it
...
1010 Hard Drive Error, Can be caused buy a currupt or missing Eprom.
...
1013 (not yet known)
...
1020 (not yet known)
...
1022 AV cable error... There is a problem with the AV cable, try using a different AV cable. (could also be a problem with the encoder chip)
...
1030 (not yet known)

Hi.

A little update.
I opened the XBOX 360's heat sinks and cleaned the cores and repaste a new layer of thermal compound.
Removed the X clamp and used 10\32 screws to hold the cores, Everything looks great.

Started the XBOX 360 and now on the start I can see 3 ROD in a second. The fans spin for 2-3 seconds and then turn off and the 3 ROD are still blinking.

Everything looks great. 1:1 like the tutorials but the XBOX 360 fails to work. What else can I try?

Thanks.
I really hate Microsoft now! Piece of shit products.

Once again, what is the error code you're recieving? It can give a general idea of where to look for problems.

Hi.

My error code is 0002. Means that I have a problem with my power supply.
This is wrong. I have 2, I have the one that I got from MicroCrap and the one that I did myself using the ATX to XBOX 360 from hack a day's guide. They both worked great. The ATX is working without any problems and succeeded to turn on successfully the XBOX 360 before.
So 2 are bads? I think that the code is something else.

Really interesting....

Any other ideas?

Thank you guys!!!!!

Yes!!!!!

I released the screws and redid it again with less power. After that I got the 0102 error.
I researched and found the Penny guide and did it.

And it works. My XBOX 360 is working.

Thanks XBOX-Scene. Thank you all guys.

This site is amazing. I can play now FNR3 and I am waiting for NInja Gaiden 2 I was afraid that I couldn't be able to play it.

Yes!!!!!!!

Thanks again.
