How To Disable All Wireless Activity? (radio Silent)
« on: December 15, 2007, 07:52:00 AM »

I happen to live very close to a radio telescope, and therefore cannot use wireless, microwave ovens,
cell phones and the like.

Is there a way to use *only wired* controllers?

Cheers,

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that the Xbox 1 is wireless to begin with.

You have to plug in a wireless network adapter or a wireless controller dongle to make it intentionally transmit wireless RF.  If you are talking about the Xbox360, it has built in wireless for its controllers, but not the original Xbox.  If you open the Xbox 1 up, you'll see quite a bit of RF shielding for FCC compliance so it should be safe around the radio telescopes so long as you are not right next to the receivers.  Make sure you use the official power cord with the ferrite beads built in so you won't be radiating RF through the power cord and you should be fine.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. My question was about the Xbox-360.
So if I understand, as long as I have a wired controller plugged in, I need not worry about
the box transmitting? (Perhaps I should ask our RFI group test one!)

You may find this interesting... http://www.networkwo...eless-lans.html

You probably have to remove the rf module from the console, as it is "on" at all times.

And moving to 360 general/hardware.....

The 360 works fine without the rf board installed.  You just need to take apart the case, remove 3 screws that hold it in place, and pull it out.

The only disadvantage (besides the obvious no wireless capabilities) is the lack of a power button.  You can of course use the guide button on your wired controllers instead.

Unfortunately it will.  The RF module is outside the main steel shield, but inside the plastic casing.  The warranty seal is on the plastic casing, just behind the faceplate, and you can't open the case without breaking it.
