Is This A Sign Of Overheating?
« on: December 15, 2007, 02:52:00 PM »

I was playing Portal for about 45 minutes and then my monitor started displaying irregular-sized triangular shapes filled with flickering static and garbled "noise."  They kept popping up and started to fill the screen.  I can't really think of a better way to explain what I was seeing.  RRoD did not occur and I'm hoping I took action quickly enough to prevent it.  I have a little knowledge about computer components and have read about the 360 being damaged by overheating (thanks X-S) but I'm having trouble finding an online description of what actually happens before RRoD occurs.  I only let this go on for about 5 seconds before hitting the power button to shut down the console.   I would have turned it off sooner but at first I thought this was part of the game due to it's humorous nature.  My initial reaction was "Ha ha that's cute" but quickly turned to "Oh sh--!  RRoD...No!"  I have the 360 docked upright in a Psyclone cooling station.  Most of the time I have the Psyclone station fan(s) on while I play or watch movies (always during HD DVD) but sometimes I leave the cooling station off because of the excess noise.  This problem happened when the fans were off.  Portal doesn't seem like a very graphics-intensive game compared to the actual HL2 game or Gears of War.  This is why I was not using the cooling station during this session.  I'm a little confused as to why this was happening.  I turned the cooling station on immediately after powering off the console in order to help it cool down faster.  I'm going to let it sit for a few hours.  In the meantime, I thought I would get some opinions about my situation from good ol' Xbox-Scene members.

Below is a link to a video that closest matches my issue.  Please note my screen was not entirely filled with static as shown in the video.  Only the triangular shapes were filled but they were popping up as if it was about to take up the whole screen.

Your gpu is probably overheating. I got e74 from it  (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) . If you still have your warranty wait for it to die and send it into Microsoft.
