X-clamp Fix Failed.....what To Do Next?
« on: November 18, 2007, 09:38:00 AM »

i hav xclampd my xbox but it does not last more than 4 days......

first i tried the fix from www.x-clamp-fix.com.....the one with one spring washer beneath the mobo and 1 spring and 1 nylon washer above mobo.....

then i went for lawdawg.......

i can only fix temprarily by changing settings a little bit and overheating and have an external 120 mm fan standing above the heatsinks.......it starts freezing followed by 3 ROD after a few days.....

how do i fix it permanent?

Ya can't really, the best temporary fix though is to have it reflowed properly and then cooling upgrades done to it to try and keep it working if the reflow works.

I never said it was, it's the bad BGA joints under the GPU and or CPU that cause 99.9% of the problems. Doing cooling upgrades right from the start is good (thus voiding the 3 year warranty for any 3RLOD, so it's not recommended, keep the warranty intact) but doing cooling upgrades after the 3RLOD fact isn't really going to help much at all, that's where the reflow works best at an attempt to get it going again. The X-clamp replacement done by itself is a 50/50 shot and not something that will last as long because it only presses the bad BGA joints back together to make connection again, that can and will fail later down the road, just a matter of time. A reflow is at least an attempt at resoldering the BGA joints for a longer lasting temporary fix, but nothing is a permanent fix and isn't going to be until M$ starts building these things right from the start.

RDC, if I am not mistaken it is nearly impossible for the "do it yourselfer" to fix bad BGA joints unless you have a reflow machine right?

Correct, it needs to be done on a machine with the correct profile, top side heat, bottom side heat and ramp up/cool down times, so it's not something that can be done anywhere near properly with a heat gun or a toaster oven. True it does cost around $50-$100 to have it done, but if your warranty is gone and ya want the best chance at having it working again it should be looked into, but even then it's still not a 100% guarantee that it'll fix it, but it's the best method and the only one that attempts to solve the problem.

I came up with this for a similar issues I was having.. I've done too so far and both consoles are working again.

This is a last ditch effort by the way.
