360 Is Really Loud After X-clamp Replacement
« on: February 03, 2020, 03:01:00 PM »

so i followed the lawdawg method of replacing the x-clamp to bring back my 360 that red ringed last week.  it seems to work ok now, but it is much MUCH louder.  when i boot it up, it is quiet as usual (when there is no disc in it).  then once it is on for a little bit of time, it starts getting louder and louder at a steady pace.  it sounds like a hairdryer, but the way it gets louder reminds me of a jet getting ready for take-off.  i feel a lot of air pumping out of the top of the 360 (top being near the hdd, since i stand it vertical).  but there is no more vibration in it than usual.  it seems to work fine, i even played some games for a bit.  but the loud noise makes me really nervous when playing a game.  my instincts tell me i should turn it off, because it seriously sounds like if it gets any louder it will break or blow up.

anybody know what the problem may be?  did i just fuck up when i put the system back together?  was it something with the x-clamp replacement?  did i somehow unlock the super secret shit-your-pants case fan?

but seriously, i think i am scared of my 360 right now.  any help would be great, thanks.

Well is it the DVD drive that is getting loud or the fan in the back?

The fans in the back increase and decrease according the temperature of the console? So it might be a heating problem. Did you properly clean the cpu/gpu and put some arctic silver 5 thermal compound on them?

Have you tried playing the 360 in the horizontal postion?  Is the inside of the console free of dust?

i positioned it horizontally, and it still gets loud.  the air coming out of the back changes rather quickly from cold to warm, and the air flow increases as the sound gets louder.  so i guess it is the fans.

i did indeed put Arctic Silver 5 on the cpu, gpu, and even the RAM chips.  i don't think much dust got in there.  so what is causing this?

Well I've read that it's not recommended to put thermal compound on the 2 rams chips next to the gpu because  the heatsink does not make direct contact with the chips.  It might be the reason that the fans are spinning so fast, so maybe going back and cleaning off the as5 from the ram chips will stop the fans from spinning so fast.

shit... i read that you CAN put silver on the ram chips.  ok, i will remove it when i get the chance later tonight and try it without the arctic silver.  i will let you know.  thanks.

Also did you put a rice grain size of AS5 on both the cpu and gpu and spread it out evenly?  Because if you put too much on, I've read it can have the opposite effect of cooling.

well, i removed the AS5 from the ram chips and reapplied it to the CPU and GPU.  this time, i used much less and got it on there about as thinly as i possibly could.  after all that (which took me way longer than it should have), it still does the same thing it was doing before.  however, now it seems to take maybe a minute or two longer to get loud, and i don't think it is getting quite as loud as before.

any more ideas?  i am guessing that maybe one of the heatsinks does not have a good connection on the chips.  is it safe to play games?  will this problem slowly remedy itself as the AS5 experiences the highest and lowest operating temperatures?

100% right, the temps in the xbox are hot hence the fans are running at top speed. the cpu or gpu is running hot thats why the fans are running fast.

I just did the x clamp fix too and it has the same problem with the fan being really loud. It seems to be spinning at full speed right now, which is great for cooling but is super annoying.

if the loud fan noise doesn't go away...open your console and check the back of your heat sink to see if there are paste on them.

if your fan gets really loud after the RROD fix, then your heat sink is not fully touching the CPU/GPU or you have too much AR5 paste on them. it means CPU/GPU is getting hot and your fan is trying to vent heat out of your console, your system might still work just fine for a while (sometimes even months) but heat will eventually cause it to burn out or damage.

there is no other way around, you will have to find the problem and fix it because the problem will not go away by itself until the heat sink is making good contact with CPU/GPU.
