Im currently using iXtreme 1.2 rev2/3 on a brand new hitachi 59. I had the new system laying around, so i've only been using it maybe a couple of months. I've always used Verbatim & never really noticed noises other than the usual spin ups/downs. For the passed month i've been using 8x Memorex burned @ 2.4x & these seem to be the cause of the rattling. I know everyone is going to tell me to stick with Verbatim, but my question is, is there something to tighten up maybe inside the drive? I remember reading something about tightening down the magnets or something? Problem is, i cant remember where i read it. Im going to be using these for a bit since i got a sweet deal on a 50pk.

Here's something else i've noticed that probably is nothing to worry about....I'd say in the passed week or so i've been hearing the drive spin up then down, up,down a lot lately. So is this something to be concerned about since it started happening out of nowhere?  The drive was pretty much at a consistent speed when i first started using it.

Any info would be a appreciated (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Well I'm having a similar problem I bought COD4 yesterday played it all night but the DVD drive started making some serious noises spinning up and down constantly making some pretty loud noises very odd never had this problem before until started playing COD4. Today I turned on the xbox and the dvd drive keeps opening and closing it will not stay shut sometimes it will try to read the disk but it says unreadable disk??? I do not have any mods at all I decided to purchase a new box after all the banning started hapening
all my games are original. I did replace the case to a better cooler case that monitors the heat and turns the fans on and stuff but thats it no modded firmwares on the drive. anyone have this problem no how to fix it???? it is a Hitachi v78 drive

Have you guys tried opening up the drives to see what the problem is?  Check and see if the sliver colored magnet that's attached to the spindle motor (the part that makes the disc spin) is still their.  If not then check the white cog, underneath the drive's top cover.  Then super glue the magnet back where it belongs, evenly in the proper position.

Hey, someone else was having the exact same problem, turns out the magnet on the spindle motor came off. Check out this thread to learn more: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=628740

Are you still able to play games on the console even thought you're having this problem?

Ya i can still play games fine...The drive spins up & down more than it used to and at certain points it does the slightest pause til the drive spins up really fast again. Only occasionally do i hear the rattle...its usually when i first start a game & when i come back to the dash. I'll give a look @ the thread though...thanx

On mine the magnet did come off I re super glued it where it goes but it still does not read the disks properly it will work some times but most of the time it just says unplayable disk error. I tried the rubber band trick and that just stops the drive from reading anything at all. Ultimately I had a spare v46 drive I spoofed it and changed the keys to match and it works great. I will probably buy another v78 drive and just make the keys match so I'm not spoofing anything. M$ equipment is suking big time what the heck are they doing we pay good money for this stuff and it just keeps braking over and over I replaced the standard case to one that keeps it cool all the time and monitors the temp for me because I already burnt one 360 up from over heating there case just blows and now the drive goes bad cant send it back to them for repair. and then they want to ban us for fixing there hardware mistakes. what do they expect us to do keep there current defective equipment and send it out for repair a few times a year. I would rip my hair out if my three kids didn't have something to keep them occupied for a day. I wish someone would create an online experience like xbox live for free without worry of bannings with just as many users playing all the time.

I stand my system vertically, so maybe that's the problem? I've always used verbatim media, but like i said, i did catch a good deal on 8x memorex. Maybe the memorex discs are lighter in weight & are flopping around a lil bit when it spins upto 12x? You can tell Verbatims are made of better quality and dye.

Anyways, i may take it apart later. I saw the pic in the other thread....So what am i looking for exactly? To see if the metal magnet on top of that black rubber circular object is out of place? I saw someone mentions something about cogs? I've replaced a laser for a friend of mine, i just never messed with the magnets. Any help would be appreciated.

The answer to your questions is about the magnets is yes and yes.  I really don't know if the technical name for that piece is really called a "cog," but it's located underneath the dvd drive's top cover.  It's possible that the magnet is loose, so the discs are not properly secured when booting them with the 360 vertically.  Have you tried booting the disc while the console is horizontal?

I dunno man, everything seems to be in its place & secure. Im guessing its just the media? It hardly ever makes a noise, only once in a blue when its first spinning up or doing a long load @ 12x(noticed a lil during the new Smackdown game). What really brought this to my attention was COD4, but when i did some reading it seems that this game does a lot of streaming in general...so the game is constantly making the disc spin up & down.

Here's a couple of shots i took...

Have you taken a look at the magnet at "eye level" to see if it's secured evenly or crooked?
