QUOTE(deekaey @ Nov 2 2007, 07:15 AM) *

so after one last attempt i took apart the heatsinks again, swabbed them up good with AS5, put everything perfectly back, slowly, and carefully

out of the case i go through burn process, everythings looking normal

i test it out after burn process, and i get a 0021 error, dvd drive not cooperating with the cpu chip?

doesnt make sense because
         A) i dont even have a dvd or game in
cool.gif reapplying thermal paste wouldnt make the dvd drive's firmware freak out

the other chance i heard was a cold soder on the south bridge, which in this case im screwed because i dont have access to any type of resodering tools
can anyone make anything of this?

I am in same boat as u are , i was having 0102 error , did xclamps , penny , overheat , loosing and tighting screws , but now i am getting 0021 error..

I am also looking for try something different. If u guys get going futher please post your thaughts here.

Regards

DK,

i have done quite a few 3lod fixes, and i am not faimliar with lawdawgs method, i believe RBJTechs MK3 x-clamp replacement method is the best one.

you mention u got green lights, the first time u attempted overheating, and then back to red again with 0020. This is a vague error but i  reproduced it and believe that the CPU washers may be too thick and not be making good contact with the dye and heatsink.

i strongly recommend you to try the rbjtech mk3 method, if u live in the UK, i do not mind fixing it for you for a price. PM me..

next time you open up the 360, turn it on without the fan connected and time how long it takes to overheat, whilst touching the heatsinks with your hands, if they are getting v hot within 30-60 seconds then this is a good sing. By the time u get 2 red lights, you should not be able to touch the heatisinks for too long as it is that hot.

when i was getting the 0020 error, both heatsinks were getting hot, but the CPU was not getting hot as quickly as i expected (i have done temp reading analysis before and was comparing to a healthy 360), thus i removed 1 0.5mm washer (i accidently put 2 above mboard inseatad of 1)... this fixed it....

good luck mate...

i have 1 nylon washer on each side of the gpu screws and 1 nylon on te backside and 1 nylon/1metal on the top of the CPU
also someone mentioned taking off the metal part where the xlcamps use to be, freeing room for my screw heads...

how would i go about this in a dorm room with no access to power tools?
i doubt a hack and slash session on my metal box would result well.

if u still have your original screw that held the heatsink to the x-clamp. Take out the chip and mboard out of the chassis, put the heatsink screw into the mboard hole, it should just fall in. Now look at the height between the mboard and where the eahtsink would normally screw donwn onto.... the gap is about 1mm, you need to replicate this with your nylon washers.... if the gap is ignored (i.e no washers above mboard, the mboard will flex, normal to get the 3 red lights, if the gap is too much, then there is bad contact between the dye and heatsink, both result in red lights.... how thick are your nylon washers?

PM me, when you reply to this message, so i know to read your update.

p.s. if u in a dorm room, all you need is a power hand drill (they cost about $20 for budget oens, but it will do the trick, you only need a 5mm drill bit), why dotn you make some friends from the Design faculty? they notrmally own power drills or have access to them....

hey just got your message, i think i figured out the 0020 error, after a lot of play with the screws

now im getting a 0021 error so im going to buy a soldering kit and resoder the traces i scratched and resoder the southbridge

have any tips? if this is even the right thing to do?

The reason i dont think the traces are damaged is:

1) The xbox greened all the way after the scratch before i tried to overheat it the first time.
2) The scratch was thin, and it looks like i just damaged the outer coating

As far as the 0021 error code goes

A) I have a flashed xbox that has worked fine, so i dont think its the DVD drive problem
cool.gif The other idea states it to be a southbridge chipset problem

If it is the southbridge, how would I go about resoldering the chip back on. I'm wondering if there is a tutorial anywhere about getting it off and putting it back on.

Any help is greatly appreciated
