my xbox gave me the 3 lights first after 2 days straight of beating bioshock. I have an intercooler btw.

I used the towel trick once, it worked, but only for one night, hasnt worked since.

I did Lawdawgs Xclamp conversion.

here's the weird part, the first time i burned after the xclamp fix ( the xbox powered on with green lights, and flashed around the sectors like it was normally booting up. The instruction said to let it over heat, so i did.

After reassembling everything, I cut it on to find a 0020 error again.
Took everything apart, cleaned and reapplied thermal paste, and this time I rescrewed all 8 of the black screws( dunno if this was necessary or not)

Strait to 2 reds.

I loosened the gpu screws that i got from homedepot so that they were just snug, not overly tight.

3rlod this time with a 0022 error.

After repeated trials of tightening and losening and leaving some screws out or having them all in.
No dice.

Now I am getting 0020 and cannot do anything to change it.
I am stuck.

Also, just a side note, I only replaced the xclamp to the shorter grey heatsink, the GPU.
Another side note that I have noticed is that things didnt line up when I just dropped the mobo in the case, I had to push down the mobo to put the RF panel and cables in to test, which means that I am bending the mobo.

I really dont know what to do, after 8 hours of screwing, unscrewing, researching, testing, cursing, more importantly not doing my studies, I have decided to get some outside help.

Have you tried removing your intercooler some people claim it actually causes red lights I dunno I modded mine to run on its own 12v PSU but dont even use that no more since I got a new 360 so I dont void my warranty. Also when I x-clamped my old 360 I did cpu and gpu using MK1. It worked on off for a couple of days but required constant attention which I belive is because I needed a shim. Good Luck

On the CPU side there are xclamps on top and on bottom.

just replace the one on the backside?

For bro deekaey..
You have to error and trial. The key in its boisterous it him spanner. Try other method. Or way of which I use
 
My method:
Crosscut an eraser 0.5 cm and used to sprag mobo.

Not exactly sure what you mean. Where do I put these erasers? And trial and error with which part of it?

It seems like the center of the mobo sticks up higher than the rest? what would erasers do? and could it be because the head of the screws are too big?

also, should I even worry about doing the xclamp for the cpu heatsink? i did the GPU already

just tried the cpu, no difference =(

i am still getting the 0020 light

just to sum things up, when i am testing (after the overheat of course)
i have :

-av/componet cable
- power cable
- fan
- dvd drive

- no mobo screws at all except the ones holding the heatsinks down.

also the eraser trick doesnt make sense to me, if the board has to flex down for me to plug in the my cables, why would i add more stuff to the bottom of it? wouldnt that just make it taller?


i have my box open now, with no clue of where to go next

i have 1 nylon washer on each side of the gpu screws and 1 nylon on te backside and 1 nylon/1metal on the top of the CPU


also someone mentioned taking off the metal part where the xlcamps use to be, freeing room for my screw heads...

how would i go about this in a dorm room with no access to power tools?
i doubt a hack and slash session on my metal box would result well.

i never tried the eraser trick, but i did the 2 penny trick which is about the same i guess (correct me if i'm wrong please), and it did solve my problem for 2 or 3 days, now i'm on the same boat as you

ive noticed now that my board droops down in the middle, and thats why i had to push down the corners to plug in the cables. so its not a problem with my screws being too big ( they barely come out past the componets on the bottom of the mobo)

i feel like an idiot because i am really savvy when it comes to computers and figuring out why they arent working.  

i know im missing something...

has anyone fixed something similar to my situation?

since my board is flexed down in the middle when i just sit it in the case for testing, could this hinder my test results.

i have tried over and over to get it to post, but cant get around the 3RL

your 360 is done.

I´m on the same boat as you. After many month reviving my console,this time is imposible... X clamp, pennys, and nothing worked.

Still get 0102 error code.
If i overheat, the console will power up but it will freeze after a few sec or min.

I guess is time to get a new console.

This is why I just bought a new 360 with a good warranty cause I got tired of this BS. Try putting the MB screws back in and let the 360 run for like 15 min. with the red lights. Then let it cool for like 5 min. Then back on and see if it works. That worked for me on my old 360 a few times untill pemanent red lights. Probly could have been fixed for good with the shim method but a new one was a option for me cause a had a little extra money last month. Also I had to tighten my nuts pretty darn tight on the heatsinks before it worked and I did not use nylon nuts I used metal machine nuts. Nylon made no sense to me on the gpu heat sink cause how hot that one gets and nylon will strip easy. Good luck

PS: I never tried the eraser trick or pennies but I think the board must be screwed back down to case in order for that to work causing a flex to the board. I wasnt about to insulate those hot ram chips with a eraser or wrapped pennies anyway. Those guys get super hot.

Mobo screws are tightened down as far as they will go before the mobo cracks

I cannot get past redlights with any method :

Towel Trick
Tightening the screws to max tight and slowly loosening and trying each time
In case, out of case
different screws tightened
different washers


the weird thing is, when i first tried, i got all greens during the burn process until it overheated.
when i put everything together, it didnt work

and i havent gotten past the 3 reds yet

so after one last attempt i took apart the heatsinks again, swabbed them up good with AS5, put everything perfectly back, slowly, and carefully

out of the case i go through burn process, everythings looking normal

i test it out after burn process, and i get a 0021 error, dvd drive not cooperating with the cpu chip?

doesnt make sense because
         A) i dont even have a dvd or game in
          reapplying thermal paste wouldnt make the dvd drive's firmware freak out

the other chance i heard was a cold soder on the south bridge, which in this case im screwed because i dont have access to any type of resodering tools


can anyone make anything of this?
