Dvd Drive Not Working
« on: October 27, 2007, 05:06:00 PM »

I was doing some mods and my xbox worked after testing and then after putting it back together I got an error light. I took the box apart and checked everthing. After reconnecting the dvd drive and powering up I noticed a little smoke and turned off the box. I also noticed that the dvd drive didn't make any sound when powering up. The burning smell is  coming from the back of the dvd drive. The bottom right led is blinking red when drive is connected to the box. If disconnect the drive the box boots up normally and the power led blinks. I'm able to play games from my hard drive and go on live. I got an error code of E65 which from my research on the forum states that it has something to do with the DVD drive. Since my drive doesn't power up and I believe that is the definite problem, would I have a problem installing another Xbox 360 dvd drive? If so, then what steps would I have to take to put another drive in. I have the TS-H943A

you can switch the drive... its ALOT more complicted than just PLUG AND PLAY with a drive... first you have to get the key from your old drive... which i dont think you can do now since its fried! but you would hook it to your computer with a sata cable... pull the key from it, spoof the mobo into thinking the new drive you put into it is the same one, but use the old key...

look in the backup forum for ALOT better description

Damn!!!! I'll check it out and see if I can do it. That means I'll have to buy a new box if I can't get the key.

The FW chip will have to be pulled from the drive and dumped with an external programmer to get the key from it now, provided ya didn't let the smoke out of that chip to begin with, have to see the board to know for sure on that one. Provided the FW chip is still good the key can be retrieved and a new drive installed.

Could you do the work? How much would it cost? Would it be better if I just sell the unit and upgrade to a new box?

Yeah I'm pretty capable of doing it, though use PMs for that sort of thing, this isn't the place for that type of discussion. IMO it's worth repairing it, provided the SST chip on the board isn't what smoked, since that's where the key is at. Did you plug it in upside down or were you doing any mods to the DVD drive itself? Kinda odd for the thing to just up and smoke on it's own if everything was done correctly, it does happen, but it's pretty rare.
