What Is A Permanet Xbox 360 3rod Fix?
« on: October 23, 2007, 05:44:00 PM »

Is reballing the GPU really a permanet fix for the 3rod? How long will this fix last? Is their any proof that reballing the GPU will fix it? I have already done the x-clamps mod and i am back to the 3rod. now i am wondering if i should have the gpu reballed or go on ebay and buy a cheap broken system that still has the warranty seal on it and send it off to microsoft? which one would be better?

oops this is definitely the wrong category sorry please move it

Yeah reballing the GPU is a reasonably permenant (and most drastic) way of fixing the 3 red lights. Mosst of the time the 3 red lights are caused by cracks in the solder between the GPU and motherboard because of the high heat and shitty solder they used.

I guess reballing the GPU would be slightly cheaper than buying a broken 360 and salvaging the motherboard, but it depends on who you go to to get the GPU reballed

Well, the only thing microsoft is doing different with their GPUs is supposedly better solder.  If you buy a cheap sealed one from ebay, reballing the GPU is the best you can hope for from MS.  I'm not really sure either is a permanent solution; the 90nm gpus generate an incredible amount of heat, and it's really hard to get enough air flow on it.

I don't think Ms even re-balls them , I read a post a while back from a guy stating he worked for MS and he said they only do a re-flow.

re-balling them would be too time consuming and costly for them to do. their solution is to just keep recycling them until they come out with revised M/B's and revised heatsinks etc. til they figure out a solution.

Would opening the case and having a big house fan (double the size of a desk fan) on full RPM about 30cm away from the unit be adequate cooling?  I  think this would be the cheapest most effective way.

Any input?

i think the only way to perm fix it would be to reball with lead solder and either air cool the crap out of it or watercool. it should be good if you can get it to the point were the board doesnt flex anymore, then it will work for a long time.  i got a replacement console from MS and the day i got it back i voided the warranty, i did every mod on here except lap the heatsinks. im currently running at 44C (CPU) and 40C (GPU the biggest problem with the 360 at the moment) and its doin great. all done by air cooling and its not even louder than the dvd drive. when i power it off i have a evercool ECS to drop the temps faster so the chips dont bake in the heat. my other 360 would tick and make other noises (when cooling down) but not this bad boy.
