Help, Advice On How To Save A 100 Bucks

My Xbox 360 started having bad overheating problems, like even if I turn it on for 5 minutes it will go crazy and give me two red lights and shut off. I called Xbox and they said that they don't cover it under the extended warranty, they only cover the 3 RROD.

My question is, is there anyway to make my 360 have the 3 RROD so it is covered? I don't feel like 100 bucks for faulty hardware.

remove old thermal paste
apply some new thermal paste
tighten heatsink screws
