E74 Fix

Right i had some guy bring round a broken 360 for me to fix no mention of what was wrong with it when he brought it round i found it had a E74 Error.

Which is the Hana/Ana Chip problem

So heres my solution this is a complete DIY fix so this is no permanant fix but ive found it to work very well the reason i tried this is microsoft didnt cover his console for warranty anymore.

So only try this is as a last resort try your best to get MS to fix it for Free

Things You'll Need:

1 x E74 Error'd Xbox 360
1 x Roll Of Electrical Tape
15 x Pennies
1 x Hairdryer

Step 1: Take the console apart taking off both sides of the case removing the dvd drive and white funnel for airflow.

Step 2: Locate the Hana/Ana Chip (it's too the right of your A/V connection)

Step 3: Get yourself some electrical tape and get 15 pennies and tape them up in this order

3 sets in 4's and 1 set in 3's

then tape them together as one so you should end up with a big stack

Step 4: Get yourself a hairdryer (not a heatgun as it generates way too much heat i found a hairdryer worked very well) now plug your Hairdryer in put it on the hottest heat setting and get it as close as possible to the Hana/Ana Chip leave it there heating up for a good few minutes you'll notice the outer casing get very hot when finished

Step 5: Plug the 360 back in still hot and see if she boots, if so goto Step 6 if not repeat Step 4

Step 6: Get the stack of pennies you made earlier and place them on top of the Hana/Ana Chip and tape it down with some electrical tape in the shape of a plus sign ( + ) then put the white funnel back on and apply pressure to make sure it fits snug tape it down with some more tape next put your dvd drive back in place you'll notice the back end will be slightly elevated

Step 7: Put the top part of the case back on leaving all the bigger torx screws out which you removed earlier (why leave them out you ask?  i found if i put them back in after i tightened them i got a RROD Error 20)

Step 8: Put all remaing case back together and reconnect all your cables and test again and we should see the console boot.

This may not work for everyone!

This is taken from the idea of the penny fix by another member of this forum it still has the general idea of colder solder points which need reinforcing.

It appears to be sound, theoretically at least. I'll be willing to try it & post some pictures, but it might be a while.

The last E74 console I fixed with a simple x-clamp and 2 penny trick (on the ram chips), but if it is an encoder problem (ana/hana), then I'd say to try this method.

Just some question

Should i leave the motherboard in the metal casing when doing this ??

should the hairdryer face the top part of the board or the botto part??


and just some contridtion

if u press down on tha hanan chip can't u bridge the BGA if its a bit get metleted

the reason i use so many pennies is to create pressure so the chip is getting pressure so when it gets hot the contacts bond again

also answering questions i left the motherboard in the metal casing

i applied the hairdryer for at most 2 to 3 minutes so while i was putting the console back together it remained hot so it  didnt e74 again before i got the pennies to apply the pressure


also the console i done this on has been playing fine all night with PGR4 GoW and Halo 3 also has been left at the dashboard for 2 hours for testing

i tried something simliar, with the idea to create pressure on the chip, it does work, but unfortunaltly only for abit, and ull end up with getting artifacting on th screen, well idid anyways. maybe i didnt aply enough pressure, maybe ididnt heat it up enough, worth a shot though. can i just as do u mean US pennies? if so how many UK pence is that

i think this may just be a temp fix but i might give it a shot

ive got 2 e74 error consoles here, I've done the x-clamp to both and that fixed it for a day or two but just artifacts on me then gets the e74 on reset. i can get them to boot and play for about a day by tightening/loosening the screws. i haven't found anything permanent yet

this method works!! fixed my E74's 360 console!!

it doesn't matter whether this is a temporary fix or not, all that matters is IT WORKS!!

ANA chip isn't a BGA chip so I don't get the reason of putting pressure!
If there is a problem in soldering on pins then we can resolder that pins. I think by resoldering, we will get better results.
BTW, resoldering ANA chip isn't something that everyone can do but a person with medium soldering skills can do it by spending an hour.
I've done it before without any problem.

im guessing that it pushes the pins down onto the board a bit more and heating it up makes it cling to the board (not solder it to the board cause it doesnt get that hot, but just makes it stick a little bit)

but the E74 error is not always a broken connection on the ANA/HANA chip though, it may be the GPU, or anywhere in between the GPU and the AV port, it could be that something is damaged (ie, a bus or the ana chip) which is either corrupting or stopping the data all together
