i bought my 360 pre-modded 3 months ago and havent had a problem until this morning.

i mostly play gears of war online but today i put my original disc in and was greeted with "disc is dirty, please clean e.t.c." so i thought hmm, it cant be broken already....... i examined the disc and it doesnt appear to have any marks that would cause an error, after numerous attempts to boot the original i tried using the backup (which i did myself when i originally bought it) and it booted fine!!!!!!

i thought the disc must be bad in some way so i tried my friends GoW disc and it does the same thing, im puzzled now because surely a mastered disc would read better than a backup???

the only other game i own (saints row) doesnt even get that far, i put the disc in at the dashboard and it sounds as if its about to load the game up but then stops and says "Unplayable Disc" but once again the backup works fine!!!!

i've tried cleaning the disc, clearing the cache, booting without the HDD and have also stood the 360 vertical but nothing seems to help, i havent tried a lens cleaner yet as i asumed it wouldn't help.


i have a Samsung MS28 drive and my 360 has MFD 07/2006, the backups are on Verbatim DL discs.


is this drive on its way out already? is the lens dirty or mis-aligned? is there an easy way to fix this or do i need to replace the drive???


any suggestions would be great.

simple. pot tweak or replace laser.

thinking back i remember doing something similar a few years ago for my PS2 that had a DRE, i will try the pot tweak later on today and see what happens.
