so last night my 360 started to get really loud when it was just sitting on dashboard, then it shut off with 2 red lights (the left half)...i googled around, saw it was a heat issue.  i have a clear case so i watched the next time i turned it on and the right fan wasn't coming on.  i took it apart, cleaned both fans and the heatsink as it all got dusty somehow...put just the top half of the case back on and turned it on, both fans came on.  cool.

then i put the bottom on, and only the left fan came on.  i took the bottom back off, and the right fan came on for about 2 seconds and then turned off.  does this sound like a fan issue or something on the mobo?  i don't want to waste money on a talisman or some other replacement fans if they're going to do the same thing...i have no soldering experience so the 12v mod isn't really an option at this point

Nevermind I read the other half of this.
Try wiggling the cable and make sure its plugged in all the way.

wiggling did nothing, same results...sometimes it would work for about 1 second and thens hut off, sometimes no response at all...i think i'm gonna figure out some other cooling option...maybe cut a few holes if i have to lol

ive had the same problem once....see ur fan has 4 little squares, look into them and most lickely 1 of them is not level with the others, thus not making contact with the power. Just push the wire so it becomes level with the other wires

Are you powering any other fan/device from the main fan plug?

level with the other wires?  i don't follow.  oh you mean on the connector that goes into the power plug on the mobo?

yeah i have 2 sets of led's, but even when i took those off it still worked intermittently...either way i ordered the talismoon fans off ebay, i think i might cut a hole in the top of the case as a vent for the processor's heatsink...i have an extra case anyways...

If you were running LED's off of the fan plug you may have damaged the transistors on the motherboard that control the fans, they can be easily overloaded and damaged.

The transistors are Q3M1 (powers fan close to video plug) and Q3A2 (fan by power plug)

The part number is BCP51, I sell replacements or can install them for you, it can be done with a regular soldering iron but is much easier with a SMD reflow station

could it be possible to damage a transistor to working sporatically though?  i thought it was kind of an on-off thing, not a sometimes on sometimes off thing...and i can't solder jack lol...did it once for a project in high-school, since then, nada

*edit*
and i've had the led's installed the same way for at least 8 months with no issues...not sure if that matters or not

It really doesn't, the constant strain on the 12v line probably just got the best of it and finally it decided to go (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif)
