Xbox 360 secrets: After Falcon comes Jasper with 65nm GPU

There is nothing wrong with "90nm".

Stop blaming "90nm" GPUs for the 360's problems. There's nothing wrong with them. The 360's ability to deal with the heat they generate was/is a problem, but not the fact they were "90nm".

Shut up about "90nm". Waiting for "65nm" just because it is not "90nm" is stupid.

There are plenty of superb, ultra reliable pieces of hardware that use TSMC's 90nm process. My PC's GPU uses TSMC's 90nm process and it kicks out a great deal more heat than the XGPU. AMD's fastest and most power efficient parts are still made on "90nm" processes, and Nvidia still use it for their high end graphics chips. Just stop this "WAAAAAAH MS are stupid/lazy/cheap for not already using 65nm GPU".

Changing over to TSMC's 90nm eDram process (which Falcon does) is probably a good thing, and I wouldn't be suprised if the GPU as a whole now consumed less power, and generated less heat, as a result. The seemingly revised main GPU chip may possibly require less power too (as yields have almost certainly improved drastically).

Also worth noting:

- Lots of reliable things use x-clamps
- A percentage of all hardware fails
- The RROD is a general hardware failure warning and future Xbox 360's will still see this and it doesn't mean OMG STUPID MS HAVE DONE NOTHING TO FIX TEH 360 PROBLEMS 90NANNYMEETER!!!!!

Reducing power consumption and heat generation - as has happened in the Falcons - is a GOOD THING and makes the GPU cooler's job easier, makes keeping everything else cool easier and probably means the 360's flaky, heavily loaded PSU (they didn't leave much headroom) should cause far fewer problems.

If MS wanted, they could easily make an all 65nm 360 that screwed up more than Zephyr/Falcon, so if you want a 360 just buy one and play it.

1st off your PC im sure has a more sufficient colling system than the 360.  2nd, OMG have u ever felt that the heatsink on the GPU?  You can cook an egg on there.  3rd, why are you defending M$ mistakes.  I mean i understand all hardware fail, but 33% and still counting?  Plus how many pieces of hardware have you bought and breaks in 3 months?  Mistakes are no biggie, but when it takes you 2 yrs to fix it?!?!?!?!?  Even then the issue has not been resolved.  Now you might not mind sending it in to M$ time after time, but alot of people are growing restless and slowly losing confidence in M$.  All in all its not the hardware used that is cheap and pointless, its how it all came together and became integrated.

i laugh every time i read about how people keep saying that they will keep waiting and waiting for a 360 as each new "revision" or "gaming bundle" is announced as we have seen it over and over again...obviously you don't really even want one that badly to begin with if you can wait for years to get one...while you guys keep sitting there waiting and making those type of posts - i and millions of others are enjoying the hell of our 360s...

i do know that many are waiting to buy a second 360 and understand waiting for that purpose for more robust hardware...
this revision does seem to be a slow advancement in reduction of the GPU core size, but i am sure that MS would bring it to us sooner if they could..

Words of GOLD, I just wonder how long people that never owned a 360 can wait, they need to get a life and buy one if they want to...

Life is short and they might die tomorrow while still waiting... TOTAL BULLSHIT M$ is draging this 65nm shit all along and I've been saying that all along. NOW I DONT CARE about 65nm shit, I know that I will never see it any time soon...

I'm just gona play the shit out of my current 360 until it dies then I'm gona buy the newest available with HDMI and repair the Dead one... It looks like MS wants us to buy over 3 "360" over the 3 or four years and I saw people already doing that.

65nm I dont GIVE A SHIT ANY MORE

I find it funny that people are already clamoring for the next motherboard revision, when half of them don't even know what got changed in "Falcon". You see people spouting the phrase "65 nanometer" like they have a clue what it means to the reliability of the machine in question. Granted... these are the same people who couldn't tell me the unit of measure before and after the nanometer, so I might be expecting too much.

micro 10^-6
nano 10^-9
pico 10^-12

but what does knowing what comes before and after a nanometer have anything to do with knowing what a nanometer is?

I guess it would make sense that you should know what a micrometer is but one could go their whole life and never know what a picometer is, yet have a perfect understanding of  the size of a nanometer...

I think most people are wanting it because it has been stated numerous times that the 65nm gpu will use less power, and there for put off less heat. Since overheating is the #1 issue with the 360's (thats why I haven't bought one), I dont see any reason why people shouldn't be wanting these new boards, even if we dont know what all the revisions of the last board were.

I'll be waiting till next year, then buying one for gta4 after the new board is out.

At this point, does it really matter?

How many MILLIONS of faulty 360's are now in ppl's living rooms?

Here's your answer:

NO IT DOES NOT MATTER!

THE HARDCORE XBOX FANS HAVE ALREADY BEEN SCREWED!

Why? Because there is no "fair fix" for the RRoD.

Option 1: Send it in, wait for months to get it back. (sucky solution)
Option 2: Don't send it in, buy another 360 (yet, another sucky solution)
Option 3: Install intrusive mods that dont completly fix the problem (this is the worst solution imo)

What other options do you people think you have with this new GPU?

You don't think M$ is gonna mail one to you for free do do you? For those of you that don't own a 360 yet this is good news i guess. Also good for those that want to invest in a second 360 (and not because their first console died).

The rest of us are still stuck with the above options. I don't like it either, but im willing to accept it.

Yes, the CPU has been changed from 90 to 65 nanometer in the Falcon version, but the GPU still have the 90 nanometer chip.

Okey, so how do I know if the one I buy is 65nm? I live in Sweden, perhaps it takes some time for the falcon to arrive here...

I live in Sweden too and I'm planning on buying a Halo Edition with Falcon too. So I don't really know if you can see on the box if it's a Falcon or not....you can see it on the back of your 360 when you have opened the box though, here is a link: http://forums.xbox.c...3/ShowPost.aspx

Its no surprise that someone who owns a v1 (xenon) talks like that
you own the most bugged out xbox console that ever came out and now
you cry about how people think smart laugh.gif
I will also wait until Xmas and i don't think thats "years"...

I dont think it matters what microsoft does to fix this, they have lost me as a customer forever.  My launch pro died on me from RROD back before they added the 3 year warranty, so i sold it on ebay, and bought an elite.  It had the new heatsink and what not, but last month that thing also gave me the RROD, didnt even last 8 months.   Called MS, they sent me a box, a month later i got a new (refurbished) elite, plugged it in, when to play a game, and IT RROD ON ME!!!!!!! I could not believe it.  I called them up again, and now they had me send it back to them and they wanted me to send my power supply but i know that was not the cause, I tried my friends PS on the system, and he tried my PS on his system and no problems on his system and the one they sent me was still busted.  I'm soooo fuckin pissed off.  I should be getting ANOTHER one on monday, we will see how long that piece of shit lasts.  Microsoft, if you are reading this, you HAVE LOST A CUSTOMER FOR LIFE.

I don't think it was any of the problems of getting hot or poor design it looks to me that if they would have used a thicker layer on the m/b we would probably would have less problems the board is too flimsly warps  too easy
