Xbox 360 secrets: After Falcon comes Jasper with 65nm GPU

Jasper is the code name for the next motherboard for the Xbox 360. It will becoming next August, in time for next year's holiday season. Jasper is going to have a 65-nanometer graphics chip from ATI Technologies, as well as smaller memory chips. That isn't much information, but it's enough to tell us about their cost-reduction plan. If you ask me, it's a bit of a slow pace.

I don't know why it will take Microsoft essentially three years to cost reduce the size of the graphics chip through a manufacturing shrink. It doesn't seem like they're in a hurry to launch a redesigned Xbox 360 graphics chip, considering that Intel introduced its first 65-nm chips a long time ago. ATI uses TSMC to make its chips out of Taiwan, and TSMC hasn't been the fastest at moving to 65-nm manufacturing. I understand these tasks are difficult and they take a lot of engineering resources. Microsoft has had to divert a lot of engineers to debugging problems with Xbox 360 reliability. Even so, you would think that they would have moved faster, since the move to 65-nm graphics chip will likely be one of the best things they can do to improve the reliability.

Here's something that Xbox 360 buyers will want to know. Both Falcon and its predecessor Zephyr (used in the Xbox 360 Elite) have different thermal solutions than the original Xbox 360. You've seen the heat sinks in the cut-out photos posted elsewhere. The Microsoft engineers believe those heat sinks will be sufficient as a solution for keeping Xbox 360s from overheating. From their point of view, you don't have to wait until Jasper to get a reliable machine.

this is total bullshit they have like 100's of engineers and the best they can do in 2 years is create a new fucking heatsink and hdmi this is total bullshit

W00T!! first page
J/K

What I can't understand is why didn't they do this with the current lot of revisions they've just made to the 360 GPU coming out in the Halo3 themed 360s.
I've seen photos of the GPU out of the Halo3 360s and they do definitely look different to the old school launch 360s.

It would be nice to have a .65 gpu

but it seems the cpu was useing the most power

139 watts in dash 165 ingame on orig 360

reports of the falcon seem to be around 70-80 so its a major power cut people

aslong as the extra gpu cooling does the trick its still alot better than the orig 360

i doubt it will be august anyway
it will be as soon as they can get theyr grubby paws on them
from tsmc

I've got a 360 with the new heatsink and it seems to stay cooler than its' predecessors. While it may not eliminate the problem completely, I do think that it will greatly reduce it.

Of course they are dragging their feet!  Microsoft knows that if they change something they will probably screw that up too...so they are taking as long as possible to change it.

Ah ok cool.  Thats fine, I'll wait till then to buy my next 360.  It'll be what, 200$ by then?

Sounds good to me!  Games will be 15$ at blockbuster too.  smile.gif

To be able to open the thing, do what I want to do, and not have to worry about chips peeling from the mobo is worth the wait to me.

I was thinking the same thing. I want a second one but I'm willing to wait until the 65 nm chip comes out.

Total BS.  Thats typical M$ for you.  What are the people in the mean time gonna do that own current units?  Oh wait I know, they will just send them in every 3-6 months and wait a month to get them repaired and still be happy. grr.gif   For the ones that are saying hey its ok ill wait and still be happy with the way M$ has handled this....Well to each his own but IMO, it just seems M$ is digging themselves in a deeper hole by making everyone once again wait while they find a solution (or apply) to this whole mess.  If GOW ever hits the PS3 then so long crap box.  Im tired of reading about frusterated people along with myself, who keep getting the run around from M$.  Oh BTW, i have never seen ROD on an elite until 3 days ago, when my I went to my friends apt and we were playing GOW and sure enough...BAM it froze then after restart ROD.  Great Job M$!

Why don't you just buy one now, knowing that it will almost definitly break within the designated warranty period? Meaning that you'll be able to use one now, and have the benefits of the new system when your old one inevitably dies and has to be replaced.

I have held off for over a year now, but the more I think about it the more I realise that you would just make more sense to buy the thing, use it, and get it replaced when it fails. By the time Microsoft fix all of the  360's problems it will be time for the next generation...

Or, I dont was a POS peice of hardware that will break in 3 months, then have to wait a month to get it back only to find all data on the hd is erased, or that the hardware I get back isnt what I sent.

Too many things to list.  I'll wait on a working 360.  smile.gif
