Hi,

I was thinking about purchasing a broken 360 console with the RROD and doing the x clamp fix. I would only purchase one that has the seal intact to insure that no one has tampered with it and messed something else up.

My question is, on the RROD consoles, are they supposed to boot and run for a few minutes before the GPU overheats, or do they flash the red lights as soon as you turn on the console? Is there supposed to be any video, or just RROD and no screen and no audio?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Surely someone knows how a RROD console normally acts. Am I in the wrong forum? If so, I apologize.

No one can tell you how the RRoD behaves with accuracy, as it is imposible to know what could have wrong in a particular console, what works for you, might not work for others, so it's more or less a crapshoot.

A word of advise: Having the warranty sticker intact on a RRoD'ed console is no guarantee that it will be easily fixed, as it could have been overheated to death with the towel trick.

Thanks for the reply. So, every RROD console acts differently? I though that the RROD usually meant that the GPU was overheating, or there was a solder problem.  All I was wondering is if a RROD console should or should not display audio or video. If anyone has worked on a classic RROD console, can you tell me how your console acted when it had the RROD?

What you usually will see is the typical 0102 error, which is GPU related. And yes, most of the problems on the console come from crappy solder points that break due to stress.

MarutiDriver is bang on with this one. Buying a broken system is risky you could end up with a console that cannot be repaired.
But if you insist on trying to buy one here are some that you should stay away from:

- consoles that have been toweled fixed
- consoles that have been heat guned
- consoles when the red light comes on immediately with the except of the ones with secondary error 0020 these can usually be repaired with a reflow.
- consoles with the red light that come on after an approx. 11 seconds delay, this is usually a dead GPU no reflow or reball will fix this problem
- consoles with stretched polygon, spikes and dots, this a ram related problem which is too costly to repair.
- consoles that won't power up.

There are others but these are the major ones that I can think of. All I can say is there no sure way of knowing if the console is repairable, getting the attempted repairs history can help make the right decision. There also no guarrantee that the xclamp fix with repair the console either.

I found a console that has the red lights when powered on. Nothing comes up on the screen. Would this be a bad candidate for the X-clamp fix?

Check for the error code. In probably 99% of the cases, there is no video or audio when you boot a 3 red light system, and the 3 red lights come up immediately.

I was told that there are 4 red lights and no audio or video. So, there is no error code. I should probably pass on that one huh?

Four light usually indicate no video cable is plugged into the console. But how ever your buying it from may not have plugged the cable in check with them. Once the cable is plugged in then the error code should come up if it's red lighting.
