Halo 3 Bricked My Xbox 360
« on: September 29, 2007, 11:28:00 AM »

I was excited as ever when I got my Halo 3 Limited Edition(PAL Btw), as any one would be, but then shit happened.

Here's what happened:
1)I saw that the disk was scratched up as hell.
2)Put it in anyways.
3)Got a Disk read error, so cleaned the disk.
4)Put it in and it worked!
5)Woops had guitar hero controlled plugged in. Shit the controlled was signed on as me.
6)Pulled out the controller and restarted the Xbox 360, and got the rrod.
7)Restarted frantically about 30 times, no luck.
8)Fixed the brick with the towel trick the next day.
9)Still working after one day, but can't test Halo 3 because I sent to Microsoft to be replaced.

Here are my questions:
1)What do you think cause the Halo 3 disk to brick my console?
2)Will the towel trick permanently fix the Xbox 360 since it wasn't necessarily hardware failure?

1 .  the game had nothing to do with it. most likely just coincidence it happened while halo 3 was in it. could have been any game.

2.  probably not, its gonna come back. you'll need to do some cooling mods and remove the x clamps to get any lasting solution to your problem now. all you gotta do is read the posts here, you'll see guys daily come in and ask about 3RLOD.

I could be wrong, I guess we'll have to wait til more reports come out.

I had heard about the halo 3 discs being scratched by the gamecase.

I didn't hear anything about rampant disc read errors, until now that is. I still don't think it would cause 3RLOD. unless its 3RLOD for a different hardware issue, like the dvd drive or something.

It was the same exact thing with Gears of War and every other game that people played a lot when it first came out, same thing with dashboard updates, just coincidence. If the thing hasn't ever been opened it's M$ problem, they extended the warranty to 3 years for the 3RLOD issues, they will repair/replace it.

With as many presses of Halo 3 there are bound to be some that are bad too, that just happens when ya deal with that many of them. Them releasing it in a crap case that scratches them all up was just sheer stupidity though and all their fault.

Murphy's Law - If something can go wrong, it will go wrong and at the worst possible time. Ya really wanted to play Halo 3, the 360 showed it's arse and 3RLOD on ya, it was just coincidence, really crappy coincidence, but still coincidence. Keep gaming on it pretty good for another couple days, it's bound to red light on ya again before long, that issue doesn't just 'fix' itself and if it's still under warranty then call up M$ for a box (coffin) for the thing and get them to straighten it out. f you've voided the warranty ten look into having it reflowed and the X-clamps replaced, plus doing some additional cooling modifications to it.

I guess it was a coincidence. I did the towel trick and it worked for about 4 days. I then opened it up, because I had no warranty, to try replacing the xclamps. Turns out I got the wrong stuff so I put the Xbox 360 all back together. Now it does the 3 rings of light, and then after about 2 seconds the fan shuts off, the power brick goes  orange, and I can't eject the dvd drive. So I can't do the towel trick anymore.

And 1 out of 5 times, when I turn on the 360 it will only show two lights on the left hand side of the entire ring, then the fan will go full blast for about 5 seconds then stop.

Is there anyone who can help? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

You need to do the full X-Clamp replacement, or at least just replace the thermal paste, before this thing is going to work again. When you took off the heatsinks, you essentially destroyed the connection between the sink and the chip below it. The 2 lights happen because the heatsinks are too loose, and it's instantly overheating, or at least going into "overheat mode", for lack of a better term. Go buy the right stuff, you should be fine soon.

Can't find any of the right screws or washers. I seriously cannot. Why can't I just put the x-clamps back on? Then I'd be able to do the towel trick or heat gun thing, or at least something to get it to work.

You need to clean off the old thermal paste and replace it with new.

Get a good quality one, thermal pastes vary hugely in their heat transfer.

ACE Hardware has all of the parts, or boltdepot.com
