The problem isn't the GPU/solder, it's the mobo. The motherboard is weak on the side of the gpu (which is why you don't see 3ROD involving the cpu) and tends to warp/flex upwards. When you place a spacer between the motherboard and metal chassis to force the middle of the motherboard upwards, it makes the mobo flatten out enough to work along with replacing the x-clamps.
blame canada the problem is the GPU/Solder
and the motherboard. The solder ball under the GPU chip are no longer making contact with the motherboard and causing the red light issue. It's a combination of the lead free solder, thin motherboard with too much flex, the xclamp design and heat generated by the GPU is what causes the console to red light. With the removal of the xclamp there is no longer the upward pressure generate in the middle of the GPU area nor the downward pressure generated by the four arm of the xclamp design which eliminate the flex in the motheboard.
One side being weaker then the other is false, the reason that there no CPU related red lights is because there is adequate heat removal by the CPU heatsink. Why do you think the additional heatsink was added to the GPU? It was to compensate for the inadequate heat removal of there original GPU heatsink. Along with the addtional heatsink it wouldn't been nice if MS would have redesign there xclamp mounting also.
