Hi,
My first 360 (purchased last Christmas) just got RROD. I purchased a new one. I'm wondering if I should do the x-clamp fix from the get go so RROD will not happen in the future. Also, if I'm doing it as preventive measure, should I do the overheat step?

What do you think?

I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. If you do happen to get the RRoD, just send it to Microsoft so they can repair it if you haven't opened the box.

I don't know where you live,but here(Brazil) the official cost of the 360 is about U$1400(yes,believe me),and you only get the warranty if you buy this unit,if it's imported there is no warranty.If that's you case I would consider at least doing the 12v mod and changing the thermal paste to arctic silver 5,if you have acess to the microsoft warranty(which now is 3 years)I wouldn't open the unit.

Yea, if you haven't opened the box yet, DON'T OPEN IT!

You've got 3 years from Microsoft, take advantage of it! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

If you've opened it up already.... still don't do it. There's really no point.

UNTIL - you get the 3ROD, then you can use it, if not you can always use those ebay sellers that will reball for you, costs about $60 and includes x-clamp too.

Not bad to replace your 360.

I saw xbox 360 repair services on ebay (here and here), even with a 1 year warranty.

Can anyone recommend me a seller that offer this service?

try to get a jasper unit, you can get them on ebay.

As others have stated, if its under warranty, don't touch it.  If you opened it to mod or whatever, I'd recommend (if you can solder well) to up the fan speed to either 9v or 12v.  12 is a bit loud for my taste, so I usually do 9v.   http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=637955  is a good guide for all 360 versions.

lol, it is kinda funny.

At any rate, I dunno if you need to do it on the newer consoles, but I have one of the earlier 360's (with the old noisy Hitachi drive) and I ignored the warranty and did the X-Clamp before I even put 2 hours on it.

It's still working well, although I am not a super heavy gamer so I can't promise that it won't eventually RROD, but I think it helped.

Sad thing is that it's still my 2nd 360, because my first 360 was defective out of the box, would just freeze mid-level on games over and over.

So I'd play at least through a couple levels to make sure you don't need to return the 360 you bought before opening it up for anything.

But honestly if you have one of the newest units I dunno if it's neccessary.

I did both the X-Clamp and I upgraded the thermal grease to Arctic Silver MX-2 to help remove as much heat as possible.

Since I don't game super hardcore I'm hoping this means it'll last until better hardware is out =p
