Seems you didn't look very well as there are a couple of tutorials on how to swap drives/mobos.

Anyway in a nutshell:

-Get drive key from busted drive.
-Patch that key into new drive
-Install new drive
-Game till your eyes bleed.

A lot of the drive flashing/replacement tutorials are in the pinned section of Newbie Chat and Technical DVD-ROM parts of the forum.

Define 'broken', you may not need to replace the entire drive depending on what the actual problem is.

You're right replacing the drive with same model makes things easier. But using another brand dvd drive is easy as well, providing you have the of your drive.

I have only read up on it. But if you wanna replace your drive with a different brand drive you just have to spoof it.

You need a tool called Firmware Toolbox 4.6 to do the spoofing I'm not really sure how spoofing works so you have to read up on it.

I now have a replacement Toshiba-Samsung drive for my 360.

What software tools do I need (or what would you recommend?) to get the old key off of my old drive and then patch it onto the new one?

And any other tips you could offer a first timer would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking to do the same thing with my xbox elite.  Currently I have a hitachi dvd drive and I am looking to replace it with  samsung one.

Firstly is it possible?
If so is it just a matter of reflashing it with the old hitachi numbers and wotnot?
Also, can I still go on xbox live with the new dvd drive?

Yes it is possible you will have to flash the Samsung firmware with the correct key that you have to dump from the Hitachi.
And you do also have to spoof the Samsung drive since it is a different model(you change the version string in the firmware)
iPrep offers a tool that does this for you...

Just use the search/google, this question has been answered literally hundreds of times...
